Converting Existing Word Doc to a Template

Hello,
Our marketing department has provided us with a sample of what they would like the RM Statement to look like.  They were able to convert their fancy document to word and I'm hoping I can leverage that into a GP template.  I'll be using the RM Statement on Blank Paper form but do not where to begin on this one.  Also, I've never use templates before, so I've spent the majority of the day trying to figure that out.  On my first (10) attempts, I used the existing template to get a feel for how it works.  I sort of get it now.

Also, I accidentally deleted the RM Statement on Blank Paper (original) template form.  In the screen shots below, there used to be an entry for it.  How can I recover that option?  Thanks in advance!

RE: Converting Existing Word Doc to a Template

Well, I just went ahead and ditched the idea of the Word teamplate and modified in RW.  The 12+ hours I spent on the template was a waste and I was able to design  my statement in RW in a couple hours (fortunately I know RW pretty well).  I was just thinking that it would be easier to format our "pretty" statement in word, but I got basically the same results in RW.  Plus all the field were there and it was just a matter of moving them around.

    Thanks Leslie & Harry!

    Jim,

I've had more than 1 client decide to get everything they wanted on the RW Report because they were more familiar with that report. That report could start as the base report for any Custer-facing documents you create. The RW report is always there like, a sentry in cade, you need him.  I would create a new on using you currently modified report and go from there. The big deal Is capturing and entering the vendors and Partners

    Jim,

Like Leslie, I have not spent as much time with the templates added to Dynamics GP in 2010 as perhaps I should. I tend to use Report Writer, SSRS, SmartLists, Access, Crystal... You get the picture. That being said, I thought it couldn't hurt to point you in the direction of a post by David Musgrave on the subject which references a number of additional resources as well.

Thanks for the quick reply!  When I print from the statement window, I still get XXXXX.  I'm still learning this, but it seems like I may be missing something.  Any ideas?  I'm actually thinking about abandoning and going back to RW to customize!  Thanks!!!

It is working as designed. When you are in Modify mode, all of the entries that come from the XML fields fill with the capital X. You're good, no need to worry about that. I remember the first template I worked on (SOP Blank Invoice), and it was a bit tricky until I learned the rules of engagement. Heck, who am I kidding, it's still tricky. Sometimes I have more luck with Report Writer.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Leslie,

Maybe I can piggy back a question on to this... in writing my new template, based off the sample, I am getting XXXXXXXXX in all the fields.  I've only changed the header so far and the body still has the correct values.  Why would my fields change like that?  Including screen shot.

    Thanks.

    Jim

    Jim,

You shouldn't have been able to delete the template with the asterisk next to it. In fact, the delete 'X' is grayed out whenever I select the default. You can't even modify the default template - I was going to change its name and remove the asterisk. That was a no go.

You are a unique individual with superior GP powers. Be careful of what buttons you push, GP fears you.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

RE: Converting Existing Word Doc to a Template

    Leslie,

Seems like I'm always paving the way with the tough ones!  It became too much trouble to even try to modify the sample marketing provided.  I just ended up starting with the out of the box template... which was my concern about how the template when missing.

Regarding the missing out of the box sample template, I ended up going into my test environment and creating the new template from the sample that was still there.   So, once I figured that out, I stopped pounding my head on the desk and moved on.  Though, I'm really curious about how I was able to delete it and why I can't get it back... Oh well, I'm not going to lose sleep over it!

Thanks for your help Leslie!  Have a great weekend!

    Jim,

Boy, that's a tough one. There's not a tool that you can use for this. Chapter 36 of the Report Writer manual (RW Documentation) explains how to create a template from scratch. I think it would be terribly difficult to convert an existing Word document to a Template. IF you could get it to work, it would take a long time. I didn't try it, but it's conceivable by putting the bookmarks in the right place and adding the XML source would give you access to the data. The path I would follow is to import it into the template maintenance window, add the XML data source, and place my bookmarks. You'll then need to replace each one of the data items with fields from the source file. I wouldn't attempt it, but it's a great question. Heck, there might have been a way to do it easily.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
