GP 9 SP3 on Windows Server 2008

Posted on by 6,010

Does anyone know if SP3 will work for GP 9.0 installed on Windows Server 2008?  We are having issues getting it to install.  I was reading that GP 10 required SP4 to run on 2008.  Does GP 9.0 require SP4 as well?

Thanks,

Ron

Just wanted to post a follow up that Tony's solution also works on Win 2008R2 x64.  Again GP 9.0 is NOT supported in this environment, but if you wanted to run it, you can disable DEP by using the steps from his post and the SPs for 9.0 will install.

"I also had this issue with Data Execution Prevention stopping the installation of GP9 SP3 on a Vista Client (went straight to SP3 bypassing 1 and 2 so not sure if they have the same problem). This machine had hardware DEP and there was no way to turn it off through any standard setting I could find within Vista. I used the following to get round it:- To stop the DEP protection, launch an elevated command prompt shell with administrative priviledges and credentials (log on to Windows Vista with a user account with administrator rights, and then right click on Command Prompt icon and select “Run as Administrator, or turn off UAC). Then execute the following command: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff To turn DEP protection back on simply use the following command instead: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn Not tried this with Server 2008 but I would imagine it should work. If not a Google search should find the equivalent command. After turning DEP off and rebooting I was able to install GP9 SP3 with no problem. Turned DEP back on afterwards and everything is fine. Hope that points you in the right direction. "

This worked perfect for my SP4 install. The only thing else I had to do was reboot the server after I turned off DEP. Thanks for the post.

    Chad,

What did you mean by:  "....i have been unable to simply turn it off completely so you have to add exceptions."

Thank you very much for your post.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: GP 9 SP3 on Windows Server 2008

good news: ill give you a definitive answer along with some advice.

bad news: it wont work. on x64 anyway.

first, when youre going to use software that might not be compatible and you are looking for a work around, ignore all responses that advise you to bring your software up to date. making things work when others say they arent supposed to is what we get paid for. i thought everyone at this point knew something not supported didnt imply it didnt work. i dont think at any point in this thread there was a moment when you thought it might be supported. listen to what others have tried, poke and prod, keep trying and dismiss those that talk about codes, life cycles and official "word's".

the reason it will not work is because of data execution prevention. as a guy in a previous post which was the only response to your pleas i found useful already stated. he stated he was able to turn it off in vista and get it installed and that you should try the equivalent in 2008 server. you access it from system properties, advanced tab, performance button. youll notice right off you cant add .msi files, just executables. heres where x86 will work. you want to add c:\system32\msiexec.exe. i have been unable to simply turn it off completely so you have to add exceptions. if you are on x64 youll very quickly realize you cant change dep attributes on x64 executables. you cant disable hardware enforced dep on x64 there are no system settings for it. your only option is to be able to run gp9 with no service packs.

hope this helps you or others in the future because sometimes simply upgrading isnt a possibility.

i think at this point his question was "when is gp 11 going to be released". installing a server client on a pc if this turns out not to work doesnt help much if this 2008 server hes wanting to this to work on is his terminal server.

Re: GP 9 SP3 on Windows Server 2008

GP 10 has been compatible with Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 since the service pack 2 release -- service pack 4 will be released sometime in August.

The official word is GP9 is not compatible with Windows Server 2008, in fact, this are the latest server operating systems requirements:

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP 4
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP 1 or SP 2
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition
Microsoft Windows 2000 Small Business Server SP 4
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition SP 1 or SP 2,
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium Edition
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition SP 1 or SP 2 (MSDE ONLY)
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (MSDE ONLY)
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 (Refer to KB 918983 for pre-requisites)

With that said, you may be able to run Dynamics GP 9.0 in Windows Server 2003 R2 compatibility mode on Windows Server 2008. I have not tested this nor am I endorsing this, but it is just a GP client so, nothing much to loose. You can always install a server client on a PC if this turns out not to work.

Makes complete sense.  When is v11 scheduled again?  I have read but cannot remember.  Would it benefit us to go ahead an upgrade to 10 in anticipation for 11, or go straight from 9 to 11?  I typically do not like to get more than 2 builds old.

Re: Re: Re: Re: GP 9 SP3 on Windows Server 2008

I don't think there will be any plans to have Dynamics GP 9.0 supported on any Windows 2008 Server or SQL Server 2008 64-bit platforms. With the development of 10.0 SP4 and "v11" on course, it would be a deviation from current development plans.

Any idea if it will be supported in the future?  I am mainly looking for the App Gateway addition to TS in Server 2008.  It would be really nice to be able to push the GP application only to my end users and not make them have to log in to a terminal server "desktop".

Re: Re: GP 9 SP3 on Windows Server 2008

The official word is Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 is not supported in Windows Server 2008 64-bit.

With that said, you can have your DYNAMICS and company databases installed on Windows Server 2008 64-bit running SQL Server 2008 64-bit, and have your Dynamics GP server client installed on a Vista or XP machine pointing to the 64-bit server with SQL Server Native Client. You will also have to make sure that your database compatibility level is set to 9.0 (SQL Server 2005) for your DYNAMICS and company databases.
