Data import via ODBC

Has anyone already had any experiences with the DIXF in AX7 RTW local VM?

I tried to configure a migration as I did with AX2012 R3 and failed miserably.

My situation:

I want to import BankGroups from a SQL DB on the machine called StagingDB and created a BankgroupStaging Table identical to the Ax BankgroupStaging Table.

1)  I configured an ODBC Datasource which points to that StagingDB.

2) I configured a template BankGroupTemplate which has the BankGroups Entity and validated the template.

3) When I try to import the data I click on "import" , named the job, chose ODBC as SourceDataFormat and then chose the Bank Groups Entity.

4) I saved the Import Project, chose "Apply Template" and chose my BankGroupTemplate -> The template shows in the form

5) I then can input the select statement like it was possible in AX2012 Processing Groups.

   "select * From dbo.BankGroupStaging"

Problems:

a) When I save the group and open the project again, all settings are lost (SourceDataFormat,EntityName,ODBC Select)

Is this normal? In AX2012 all settings where saved in the processing group.

Do I really have to input everything again, every time I open the Data Project?

b) Where can I see a preview of my staging data (like in AX2012) so that I can validate my select?

c) I can´t seem to get any data, when i press the Import Button there comes the error "Upload Data File for Entity 'Bank Groups' even if I configured ODBC as a Source. is this a bug ?

Thanks for any hints

Isn't it worth trying in Update 1 instead of RTW?

A silly question: How do you open the project? I can't see the option.

Re b), do you require seeing staging data before actually importing them into staging?

Can you tell us more about the error you mentioned in c)?

Maybe, I will see if I can get a hold on to the Update1 VM.

Do you have a link for MS partners ?

    a) When I save the import project, and go to the main Data Management Page, the project appears next to the menu tiles.

When you click on it , you can load it.

    b) I just want to check the data, which I am going to import, just like in AX2012 when previewing your processing group.

    c) nothing new to say, really, I open the project, fill in the ODBC, Entity and the select, save the project, and click on the import button. then a red cross appears with the above mentioned error message. Which suggests that AX wants a flatfile but I want to give it a ODBC DAta Source. Really strange.

Question: Can I upload screenshots here ?

You should be able to use the same way how you got your current version. If you deployed it from LCS, use LCS again. If you download a VM from Connect (and therefore you have access there), you can download the new one as well.

Yes, you can attach screenshots. Switch to rich formatting and then click the Insert/Edit Media icon.

    Thanks for the tips.

    Ok, here are the screenshots.

I currently dont have access to Update1 so if you could check quickly, if you have the same issues with update1 ?

Pic1: Here you can load a saved import/export project

    Pic2:

When I load the project, the fields SourceDataFormat and EntityName are always empty.

    Pic3:

So i fill the fields for ODBC connection:

    Pic4: Here is the error:

Pic6: And the AX ODBC COnfig in DataManagement

Pic7: The template I made for the BankGroups in Data Management / Templates

So thats it. If anyone has suggestions I would be very glad !

Also if the problems described above still exist in Update1.

    Thanks !

Ok, I downloaded the Update1 VHD and i received the same behaviour mentioned above

    like in the rtw version.

    :(

Has anyone tested ODBC Access in AX7 in Data Migration?

I've managed to reproduce your problem. I can tell you roughly what's going on, but I don't have a solution for you in the moment. I'll look at it, nevertheless the final solution will likely have to come from Microsoft.

The fields (Source data format and Entity name) are always empty, because they're used for adding entities to the project. For example, set data format to CSV, fill in an entity name and upload a file. The entity gets automatically added to the list of Selected files and entities you can continue adding more entities. The information about source format is stored together with the entity (in DMFDefinitionGroupEntity table), not in Source data format and Entity name fields. These fields are also not used to modify already added entities.

That's how it works with CSV files, but if you use ODBC data format, the entity doesn't get added, which seems to be a bug, assuming that I correctly understand the expect behavior. Because your setup doesn't get saved anywhere, it obviously can't be used during the import; that's just a consequence of the main issue.

By the way I struggled to open the project because the Data management workspace sometimes doesn't show Run project and Load project buttons.

It would also be worth researching, but I'm going to leave this for some other time.

In the case as uploaded files, there is a call to DMFEntityBase::addEntityForProcessing() when the upload completes. The same logic is called for Excel files, when you select a worksheet. But I don't see entities being added for ODBC and AX formats.

Unless somebody tell us that it works but we have to do it differently, I suggest you ask Microsoft to fix it.
