Dynamics AX 2009 and SQL 2016

Hi.

We have a running installation of AX 2009 and starting to get ready to upgrade to SQL server 2016

But before we get into the whole test phase, we were discussing if it even was possible to run AX 2009 on SQL 2016

Microsoft requirements papers only mentions SQL server 2012 with patches

I'm not asking for assistance, i'm just asking if anybody have been testing some similar.

Yep I know of two AX 2009 running SQL Server 2016 - both on Windows Server 2019

I even know of a Axapta 2.5 running on a SQL Server 2019.

You can read about a company who has done this here:

I know this thread is a few years old but I am finding myself to be in the same situation, has anyone using AX 2009 successfully used SQL 2016?

We're currently considering doing the same thing.

I can not see anything that would prevent AX 2009 to run fine on the latest OS'es.

Only argument to not do it would be that Microsoft would like us to "upgrade"... AKA - reinstall a new Cloud based ERP System.

For now we are very happy with out AX 2009 which latest kernel update was afaik in 2018.

We're running it on a SQL Server 2012.

Plan is to continue running it until at least 2030 simply because the price policy on the new cloud solutions are not a feasable way to go for us. Also - AX 2009 runs very fast - if you haven't convoluted it too much with bad custom code or external systems clogging up the database. Let AX (the AOS'es) own its database. Dont let Excel have direct access to AX's database (If that is the case - get it fixed)

    Hi Andre

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Problem is that there's great reluctance in upgrading Dynamics so I tried to at least move away from the really old database backend. I'll see what future holds with this for us.

Again, thanks and have a great day.

    Regards,

    Alin

    Hi Alin,

Like mentioned above, it might work, but you have to test it carefully. Even when the persons above would have done it for themselves, your environment might be a bit different due to e.g. customizations or parts of the system you implemented. You are running anyway on a version of AX which is not supported anymore by Microsoft. Instead of only updating SQL, you might also consider upgrading Dynamics AX to a current version.

    Hi folks

Does any of the previous posters have successfully upgraded to SQL 2016? We're still running it on SQL 2008 R2 and as it went out of support, I am trying to figure out if we should upgrade it to SQL 2012 or we can go to at least SQL 2016.

    Thanks for any insights.

    Hi Obenned,

    did you do this finally?

We are planning to do the same and wanted to ask which experiences you made with your SQL Server migration to SQL 2016 in relation with AX 2009?

Thank you for your feedback in advance.

    BR

    Hi Obenned,

Probably if you run the SQL server in compatibility mode for SQL server 2012, it will work. I have not tested it. Note that it is not supported; also not in backwards compatibility mode. So if you plan to use this for a production environment, Microsoft will not be able to help you in support cases.
