AX 2012 R3: Need Suggestion on Moving to Cloud

(0) ShareShare

Hi All,

I need suggestion on moving AX servers to cloud, we are already running Live companies in on-premises servers with database size of  around 114 GB. Can anyone share experience and some guidance how to go about that, whether to use LCS or create a server on already subscribe office 365 and exchange server on azure?

I also have some queries related to cloud server.

1. How the client connects to AX server residing on Cloud? whether the user will connect terminal server on the cloud or there are some setting in client configuration to directly connect to AX server on cloud?

2. If it is through client configuration, do we require VPN tunnel to be configured as well?

3. If it is through terminal server then would it be more costly? as we have more than 100 users.

4. The users needs to be re-added on the server? Will that be using ADFS or same Active directory as it is on-premises server?

5. what about the security of data? will that be a secure connection between our network and the cloud?

Any comments / suggestion would be highly appreciated.

    Hi Zeeshan

In order to be supported by Microsoft, you have to use LCS to Deploy your VM in Azure.

About connection, you can use Terminal Server ( better Remote App ).

I suggest to setup a VPN and install on Azure an Backup Domain Controller for the same Customer AD domain in order to avoid to recreate the Users.

ADFS is mandatory, for instance if you want to setup the Workflow Approval via Email.

About Security, it's suggest to use ExpressRoute, azure.microsoft.com/.../expressroute

Azure ExpressRoute lets you create private connections between Azure datacenters and infrastructure on your premises or in a colocation environment. ExpressRoute connections don't go over the public Internet. They offer more reliability, faster speeds, lower latencies, and higher security than typical Internet connections

I suggest to go through the "Windows Azure for Dynamics AX - Foundational Learning" Training.

    Is

You can find it on DLP at mbspartner.microsoft.com/.../4

    Some Topics covered are :

    1- Microsoft Azure Fundamentals

2- Microsoft Azure Fundamentals: Storage and Data

3- Microsoft Azure Fundamentals: Virtual Machines

    4- Azure Pricing

    5- etc.

Also, go through the link blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../ax-content-deploy-ax-2012-r3-on-azure in order to find details to how to Deploy AX to Azure.

Another good link is blogs.msdn.com/.../accelerating-microsoft-dynamics-ax-deployments-on-microsoft-azure.aspx, Accelerating Microsoft Dynamics deployments on Microsoft Azure

About Cost, take a look at www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx;tduid=(dd57088c773c76b611ef7aa43a0194d9)(193031)(1846393)(skim63408X1518852Xffdf8e2b4c02c30c1d1e813ebddff09c)()

Here you can find a Tool in order to estimate the Azure Cost.

Thanks Denis, for your valuable input. as i mentioned we would be having more than 100 users, so using terminal server would be costly.

Can't the user connect through AX client locally install and connect to AOS in cloud? what is required to achieve this.

    Hi Zeeshan

Yes, you could use the AX Client, but depend on the Latency between On premise and Cloud on top the VPN.

The risk is that the performance are poor.

In my experience I alwasys use RDP.

    Hi,

One more question, we have lot of customization so going through LCS is suggested or the other way. We already have office 365 and exchange servers running in Azure.

    Thanks.

    Hi Zeeshan

About AX Connection, try to considerate the Azure RemoteAPP, azure.microsoft.com/.../remoteapp

Finally, I didn't get you about the Customizations.

About the Environments creation you must use LCS in order to have the Microsoft support.

    Hi Zeeshan,

As you have 100+ users, you should go with Remote app to avoid any performance issue.

You would struggle a lot with direct connection.

Don't worry about the data security. MIcrosoft has taken care all the steps in this regards.

Regarding LCS, As Denis mentioned, you would need to fo with LCS, but not sure how effective MS support would be, as you have lot of customization in your current database.
