Changing Item(s) Tax in POS in different circumstances

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi there,

I would like to be able to change item(s) Vat in POS when transaction is taking place.

At the moment I have all my items set up at 23% vat

Straight forward selling over the counter works fine and tax is calculated correctly - no problem there.

My issues is when I am selling items as part of service I supply.

All items included in the service should be taxed at lower rate 13.5 %

I tried the toggle tax function but it changes my Vat to 0

I also tried function taxes in POS - all my Sales Tax Settings are displayed there but once I leave only the 13.5 % turned on only VAT changes to 0.

I would like to be bale to set a different Vat rate to items depending on circumstances.

Am I missing something in configuration/ cashier permissions?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Gosia

    Hi, Gosia.

I can write a hook for you so you click a button on the side of the screen and it adjusts everything.

    There would be a fee.

No matter how the sales tax is calculated, whether by item or customer, it's still stored in the same places in the data files.  Reporting is the same, only the way that it's calculated in the POS is different.  And, yes, you can change it at any time.  I would suggest you do so at the end of a period, but otherwise, anytime.

I may be wrong but I think customer tax options and price tax options can only be set at store initial setup, after is set can not be changed. And what affect a change to customer tax will have to the transactions that are already in database?

If you look at something like suggested by "TheNeos" above, consider using LotMatrix for his v1 and v2 items where v1 is the first LotMatrixItem at your normal 23% VAT rate and the v2 item is at the 13.5% VAT rate.

Another possibility is to use customer based sales tax instead of item based sales tax.  The default sales tax rate for walk-in sales would be 23% and if you don't keep specific customer records setup two customers, one for each VAT rate.  If you do keep customer records and/or bill customers, you might consider changing the customer's sales tax rate before billing service invoices to the lower VAT rate.

    Respond if you have questions?

    Hello,

    Here is a suggestion:

You may have to create as many versions of each item that has multiple tax codes. Item version with the most common tax keep with the LookUpCode as it is.

For the next Tax code copy item with "v1" in front of ItemLookUpCode of the next version and next tax code in this item.

Repeat above for next version with "v2" in front of ItemLookUpCode and next Tax code and so on...

Now when ringing v1 or v2 type in POS first v1 or v2 and then scan the item as you would it should select the right tax.

    Good luck

    Hello Gosia,

    Thank you for your question.

In the POS software, there is no way to change the tax rate on the fly, as you are describing. This is done to prevent cases of fraud by changing tax rates.

The ability to toggle the taxes was included when a customer can provide documentation that they are exempt.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Thank you,

Can you create a kit or assembly and use the 13.5 tax rate?
