I have a B.S. degree in mathematics and computer science and am fairly familiar with several Microsoft product families such as office, SQL, and visual studio as well as programming in Win32, MFC, .Net and powershell. I also currently own a grocery store and am familiar with the general structure of a POS system.
I'm looking to purchase a POS system for a liquor store and am leaning towards Microsoft Dynamics mostly because I feel I can personally build and add extensions to suit my personal business demands.
My question is, would it be impractical for me to purchase the required licenses and hardware and install/design the system myself (considering a month or two of learning/work) or would I need to hire a Microsoft Dynamics Partner to install and manage the system?

Hi Splice, I would definitly suggest You choose RMS rahter than POS 2009, of the Microsoft dynamics products. If I'm not wrong, RMS is on Microsoft RoadMap until 2016 at least, + 5 years of support, so we are talking about 2021... Not sure on POS 2009.... Also, there should be free of charge migration path to a newer product... RMS is bigger, scalable and You can find more personalizations for the product then for POS 2009, The product is really stable, a lot of years on the maket and many partners implementinng it...
About maintaining the product on your own, basically You only need the Partner for the license, rest of the tasks you can do it on your own (installing, configuration, etc...). The product documentation is good, there is a lot of information on the www, You can consult always this forum and the experts here, etc., etc.,... Maybe, I would suggest a few hours of consulting from a partner before you start installing and if possible, some support hours, just in case or in case you need to personalize the product, develop some add-ons or similar...
If You need more info, do not hesitate in contacting me...
Cheers, A.
I use POS. I find it easy to install and learn. I've heavily customized it with an MS Access database. My merchant service provider, Mercury Payment Systems, mandatorily assigns a partner. I've contacted the partner on rare occasions - usually to get some software that is only accessible to partners. Otherwise I'm self sufficient. I've run POS for 6 years now with no problems. I'm very happy with it.
The only negative to POS is that few companies (hardware manufacturer or service provider) support it. They all seem to rally around RMS.
Best of luck,
Tom
