External Item Number - ABC Code

On the External Item Description Set Up. What is the ABC drop down used for? Is that the Vendor's ABC code or internal ? See Below. I have never found or heard a complete answer on this. What is this used for and why is it there?

Hi, I understand the ABC Code. But is what this field is referring to in the table "External Item Number" table? It is a drop down. What is used for ? Is it a reference ? Is the Vendor's Code or the in house code ? No information on this at all. See Screen shot above. Thanks !
