How can I get training in current Dynamics Nav?

I have 16 years experience with Navision 2.5. Unfortunately the company I worked for never upgraded from Navision 2.5 and is now out of business. I want to learn Dynamics Nav at designer or developer level. Can anyone recommend a course or a place to learn this? A resume that brags "16 years experience with software still used by few, if any companies" is not likely to get me employment, so I realize I will likely have to make some investment to bring my skills more current.

Since you have so much of Microsoft Dynamics NAV experience, I think you do not have much to worry. Yes product has grown with each version, however core functionalities still remain same.

I suggest you to start reading following books :

    https://www.packtpub.com/application-development/programming-microsoft-dynamics%C2%AE-nav-2013

    https://www.packtpub.com/application-development/implementing-microsoft-dynamics-nav-2013

    https://www.packtpub.com/application-development/getting-started-dynamics-nav-2013-application-development

Then get involve in this community actively, reading blogs, writing forum answers; it will help you to keep your knowledge up to date.

If you required to fast-track this, I suggest you to contact one of the training partners within your region and arrange a one to one training for you.

My experience is with the 1998 version of Navision before it became a Microsoft product. I was told by a solution center and Nigel Frank ("The Global Leader in Microsoft Recruitment) that Dynamics Nav had changed so much that my experience is no longer useful.

If my experience still applies, then I should be able to easily build on what I know with some books. I especially like the idea of the book that comes with a demo license if that license will allow me to explore programming and development.

Thank you both for recommending the books and videos. The videos look like they would be of great help in getting answers to specific questions or needs.

One of the places I find the current information regarding NAV is the DLP (Dynamics Learning Portal). It is an e-learning environment created by Microsoft with great courses created with videos and interactive practices.

    Find the attached link: mbspartner.microsoft.com/.../CourseCatalog

I cannot log in to the Dynamics Learning Portal. Since I am not with a professional Dynamics company, I am not permitted access.

I also cannot find a demo database; it appears there might be a download available - but you have to be with a Dynamics NAV partner. I do not have a job right now, so I do not have access to any Dynamics NAV software that ships with a demo, and I do not know how to get a demo database until I receive the book that is supposed to come with a demo database.

Thank you for all the responses: you are very generous with your time and I appreciate that.

If anyone knows how I can get a fully functional demo that will allow me to program, design tables, etc. for practice, I would appreciate the information. Please ONLY tell me about demos that are available to ANYONE with a computer and Internet connection - please DO NOT tell me about demos that are limited to Dynamics NAV partners or existing customers.

    hello,

    Please refer this link https://community.dynamics.com/nav/f/34/t/159195

To download demo database and software. However I strongly recommend you to read the books I recommended in my earlier post to this thread. Those books include all the steps you need to follow in order to become a developer and functional consultant. Plus it is very easy to understand as well.

Practice more and more and it will make you a export.  Please let us know if you need any additional help.

I was able to download and install Microsoft Dynamics Nav 2013 following the instructions in the book kindly recommended by Tharanga Chandrasekara, "Getting Started with Dynamics NAV 2013 Application Development" by Alex Chow. I was also able to install Visual Studio using the same instructions. When I tried to run Microsoft Dynamics Nav 2013 (I believe that is the role tailored client), I get the message "You are not authorized to sign in. Verify that you are using valid credentials and that you have been set up as a user in Microsoft Dynamics NAV."

How do I set a up a user in Microsoft Dynamics NAV if I have the demo installation? I have not been able to find anything telling me how I can actually start using the demo copy of Dynamics NAV. When I open the Microsoft Dynamics Development Environment, I am not sure what specifications I need to enter on the Open Database window.

Thank you all for your help so far...

    Sean,

Please try to create a new question, that way more users can respond to your question. Your issue and title of the question does not match and your question is already verified so the question may not get more attention.
