Migrating/Converting Data from Oracle Financials databases into MS SQL Server databases

Posted on by 80

We migrated off Oracle Financials and onto MS Dynamics GP at the beginning of the 2013 calendar year. Additionaly, the organization is stabilizing on a MS Sql Server database platform and migrating away from an Oracle database platform. We currently have legacy data stored in Oracle Financials databases.

I am wondering if there is anyone in this forum who has had experience migrating data from Oracle Financials and into SQL Server. If so, would you be willing to contact me and share your experience and methodologies.

    Hi Frank,

Thank you for the reply and information on the SSAS product.  I'll look into it.

    Gayle,

SSMA is probably the most reliable way to move from Oracle to SQL.  There are probably faster ways but would require a much higher level of effort and expertise.  Microsoft is trying to make it "easy" to migrate and seems to have developed a good tool to do it.

My most recent experience was migrating from AS400.  The export generated a table definition (text) and then exported data in text delimited format.  I wrote some SQL to read the table definition and create a sql table and the used a script to grab the data and push it into the table.  This approach is quick but loses a lot of the database information from the old AS400 (ie. Keys, relationships, constraints).  The database structure was simple enough (due to age) that these losses were acceptable.

SSMA looks to me like the way to go.

Gayle, perhaps a hybrid approach would be to use SSMA to migrate the data into SQL's Analysis Cubes, which is part of SSAS (SQL Server Analysis Services) as Tim is suggesting.  This would free you from the constraints (primarily from a data reconciliation perspective) inherent in loading historical data directly into GP tables but also provide you with the data to report on.  Here's a link to SSAS info - www.microsoft.com/.../analysis.aspx.

SSMA is probably your best choice for the actual data migration.

Let us know what else we can do to help.  You have quite a task on your hands.

    Hi Tim,

Thank you for your response.  We did move over 'selected' data from Oracle into GP at the time that we went implemented GP.  However, we have over 11 years of historical data in Oracle that I would like to move into SQL database and report on it through SSRS.

We are using a tool called SQL Serrver Migration Assistant (SSMA) to convert the Oracle Schema into SQL tables and then migrate the data.  There are over 220 Oracle table to convert and the process is rather lengthy.  I am just wondering if there is a more efficient and effective method to move the data into sql.

When you say that you "Warehouse" the data in SQL -- how did you move it over into SQL?

    Kind Regards,

    Gayle

    Gayle,

I've done data migration from several other systems.  The level of effort varies with the desired results.  If management says, "I want all of our data from the old system to appear in GP as if it was entered there",  you are in for a long ride.  I have employed many tools (IM, macros, direct table import, SQL) to perform the work.

Am I reading your post correctly that you are already on GP (live)?  Adding history after Go Live is really challenging.  My approach has always been to start at the oldest data and repost everything going forward.

Another approach I have employed is to "warehouse" the old data in SQL and report on it in SSRS.

    Tim
