CRM Firing its own record updates (Randomly?)

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi All,

Rather weird problem!

I've just noticed that sometimes when a user saves a "contact" record, a few minutes later the contact record re-saves once or twice.

I wonder if anyone knows about any internal CRM processes that might be doing this?

Here's what I've found:

1. Regardless of which user saves a change to the record, the second update is fired under the record owners account

2. The second update doesn't include the fields in the original update by the actual user

3. The second update is always for: business phone, company name, full name, last name, owner, status, yomi full name

4. when the second update fires twice, they're almost always exactly 5 minutes apart, never less.

I've shut down all custom plugins and can't find any workflows/processes that relate in any way. Further to that, all of the custom plugins impersonate a high level account, not the record owner. I also see nothing in screens like "System Jobs".

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas what may be triggering these updates.

Regards, Charles

    Exciting news!

Posting back just in case anyone else is helped by this thread.

After sifting through a mountain of trace logs, the culprit appears to be the exchange server side sync. for whatever reason, some contacts must be synced to/from someone's exchange profile and when i save a change in CRM, it triggers this behavior.

The only impact to the system is that the exchange update is firing plugins unnecessarily. if anyone knows how to detect that exchange server side sync is what posted an 'update' to a contact from inside a plugin, let me know!

    Thanks for the help. Charles

    Hi Again

    Appreciate the feedback.

I ran another round on the plugins, and turned off auto-save. Neither helped. I also do NOT see entries in system-jobs for this, so i really don't think its a plugin.

Has to be a direct API call from either internal CRM behavior or externally.

All that said, i was able to reach our techs and isolate the server overnight (remove from network). the symptoms disappeared...

I guess now i'm looking for a way to identify network calls to the CRM API via SDK or similar....

    Thanks, Charles

    Hi Charles,

Usually this issue happens either because of a workflow or plugin. But you are saying, you have already checked it and its not the problem. Can you try disabling the auto-save feature and then see if it still persist. set the following highlighted as NO by going to settings>>Administration>>System Settings>>General tab>>1st setting
