Lead source or source campaign

Which field is used for determining the source of an individual lead closing? I want to understand which leads are most likely to close, lead quality, etc. Is the Lead Source field or the Source Campaign field used for this purpose? Both of these fields are in the lead record. Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi Dan,

The Lead Source is generally used for the category (Advertising, Web, Event, etc.) whereas the Source Campaign is generally used for the specific investment that you are making such as a specific advertisement, event, or web page.

The reason is the Source Campaign is a lookup to the Campaigns, which can be added and deactivated over time.  Campaigns also have more attributes, such as the budget for the marketing expense--thus you can do ROI reporting with Dasbboards or the out-of-the-box Campaign Performance report.

Since the Lead Source is a picklist, you cannot add/remove from a picklist over time; otherwise the values will be lost.  The Lead Source picklist ties to the out-of-the-box Lead Source Effectiveness report.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks, Gretchen. That's very helpful. Can you describe the difference between the Campaign Performance report and the Lead Source Effectiveness report? What are the virtues of each one, and what can they tell me?

    Hi Dan,

The Campaign Performance Report shows how many responses came from the Campaign, the forecasted revenue, the actual revenue, and the cost per response.  This uses the Campaign Response.

The Lead Source Effecitveness tells you the pecent of leads coming from each source, the % that are qualified, % that become revneu and the $$ revenue from each source.  It sounds like that might meet your needs based on what you described above.

I prefer to actually just report based on dashboards most of the time rather than using an out-of-the-box report.  Here is my marketing dasboard based on Source Campaign.
