Relocate GP 9.0 to another server.

Hi,

Due to resource issues, we have to re-locate GP 9.0 to another server  and I was advised  to perform below task to acheive the objective.

 1. Restore the backed up databases (all) from the production server to the new server.

 2. Install GP 9.0 on the new server with the same service pack

 3. Syncronize the account frame work.

I have performed task one and two however when I launch GP utilities to syncronize the framework, it does not auto detecting the the restored environment and is promptig me to create a new MSDYNAMICS database,   like setting up account framework etc.  It's  performing the tasks of new installation. which is not the objective.

I want to be able to launch GP on the new server with the restored databases from the prodcution (old) server.

What could be the issue.

Regards

Vincent

The database should be called DYNAMICS and not MSDYNAMICS - just in case that was not a typo...?

Also, it sprobably better to detach the databases and re-attcah them in the new SQL install. Rather than back up and restore. This way, you definately get the database names correct.

    Hi sandeep,

I have followed the steps in KB878449 and still find my self in the same situation as before, when I launch GP utilities i am prompted with the dialog box to create a new MSDYNAMICS environment, new account framework etc etc. My expectation is when I launch GP utilities it should detect  the restored databases from the old server and able to launch GP from the new server.

Find below steps performed for relocating the environment.

  • 1. Executed capture_login.sql script
  • 2. Full backup of MSDYNAMICS and all company DB
  • 3. Skipped backup of SQL agent jobs.
  • 4. Restored all DB's from step 2 on the new server
  • 5. Created ODBC connection on the new server
  • 6. GP server + client installed on the new server
  • 7. Executed the SQLLOGIN.sql created in step 2
  • 8. Executed dex_reg.sql script against the master SB
  • 9. Executed the grant.sql script against the MSDYNAMICS DB and all company DB's
  • 10. Executed sp_changeowner ‘DYNSA' script each financial database.
  •  What could be the issue.

     Regards

Re: Relocate GP 9.0 to another server.

Just to get the groundwork straight. Did you install the same version of MSSQL on the new server? correct colation etc?

If you did, then its just a matter of detaching the databases, moving them across to the new server and re-attaching them to the new SQL install.

There is a script available on line at customersource to copy across all of the user ID's in SQL.

Then you need to update your ODBC connections for each workstation so that they are pointing to the new server.

Then you should be able to launch GP without issues at an existing workstation. There maybe some changes required to the dynamics.set file if your reports dictionary (or any other dictionaries) were located centrally on the old server and have now moved across to the new server.

Installing a client on the new server is a completely different issue. The easist way is to install GP. Don't launch it. Just copy the contents of the GP directory from a workstation and paste it into the GP directory just created on the new server. - No synchronisation required, no worries about service packs (the server client will be on the same version as the other clients).

    Hope this helps.

    Vincent,

There is KB878449 explained How to transfer Dynamics GP Database from one server to another.
