Management Reporter 2012 Migration

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

We are running Management Reporter 2012 v2.1.1037.15 and I am in the process of wanting to move our database over to a new SQL Server. Yesterday I upgraded us to Dynamics 2015 on this new SQL Server. Now I need to get Management Reporter running on the new server. I am backed up the Database from the old SQL Server and restored it into the new SQL Server. What are my next steps to getting this working? I am looking to load the latest version of Management Reporter (CU12) on my new server. Do I just run through the install and point it to this new SQL Server?

Thank you!

-Scott

    Scott -

There are two vastly different approaches to moving Management reporter from one server to another.

First, you can back up and restore the Management Reporter database from your current server and move it to the new server, via a restore operation. Make sure you make any necessary changes to the compatibility level of the database if moving from SQL 2008 to 2014. Then install the new version of Management Reporter on the new server, and connect to the existing (restored) database. This will execute the upgrade process on that database. You can create the Data Mart once the upgrade completes (there is no need to move the Data Mart database).  This has the advantage of not just moving your reports, but the security schema as well.

Second, you can Export your report formats to a TDBX file from your current version (you should have a copy of a TDBX file put away for a rainy day, should something befall your current install already). Perform a fresh install of Management Reporter on the new server, and then recreate your Data Mart database. There is no need to move any Management Reporter database to the new server. After installation and creation of your Data Mart, then you import the report definitions from the TDBX file. This is very similar to how old FRx installations were moved around/upgraded. Here's the catch, you will need to recreate your security schema (who has access to companies and reports). So, if recreating your security schema will require significant effort, you are better served with the upgrade option.

I have to agree that there are two choices, but clearly from experience the second option presented by Harry is clearly the best choice.  We have had to move 4 clients in the past couple of months and we had tried the 'move' option, only to get wiped out twice.  So from that point on we have used the 'export' and start fresh.

It works for us.  Thanks Harry.

Thank guys! I ended up making a backup of SQL database and then restoring that into the new SQL server and then running the server software on that same machine and point it to the new server. I think we have it working just checking to see if our reports are now running properly.

    Thanks for your help!

Exporting/Importing the Building Block Group does not update any Report Groups. You would have to recreate report groups. Not a big deal unless you have many report groups with unique destination settings and overrides.

Robert makes an excellent point, security settings do not transfer using this method either. If you have a significantly complex implementation, upgrades will serve you better. That being said, make sure you have a TDBX file backup is a must.

I see this thread hasn't been updated in while. We are experiencing issues with the MR upgrade to a new server. We were able to easily install a new MR DB and import the dimension sets. We had to rebuild security but that didn't take too long.

Our big issue is that Finance uses MR Viewer and Sharepoint. All the MR viewer folders are gone when using method #2 of a fresh install.

Does anyone know how to restore the MR Viewer folders that are used along with Sharepoint? Is the upgrade the only option to have the folders "migrate" from one SQL server to another?

    Thank you
