You should approach to start with Technical developer and gradually move to become Techno-Functional Consultant > Team Management / Project Management (Product Independent)  > Delivery Management.

Brief about the role: Main role for developer would be to develop the customer specific solution, which is not available in standard NAV including reporting development.

Where as, Functional Consultant understands the requirement from client, configure it to the NAV system, train the customer team and provide the required ongoing functional support.

The person, who understand both the skills (Technical + Functional) has most demand in this today's scenario.... This off course takes some time, but one should definitely plan for this.

Refer below link to get more details about various ways of understanding NAV in more details and gradually becoming expert on NAV.

    Hope this helps.

There is no clear answer which is the best. Moreover, good functional consultant anyway has to know at least basic development skills. On the other hand, you cannot be a good developer without knowing functional scope and understanding business processes of the customer.

It might be reflected by your personal attitude to consultancy as such. If you are ok in dealing with people, teaching them, listening to their problems, and you are stress-resistant, you can be a functional consultant. If you prefer to solve problems not on-site and be rather alone or in a small team of colleagues, it would be difficult to perform as a functional consultant.

From understanding my country market (Russia), developers have more opportunities for higher salaries than functional consultants. You can grow to quite advanced developer and you can be very demanded. To my mind, for a functional consultant the path is more limited and shorter; further development of functional consultant is usually to a team lead of project manager.
