Best Practice for Events hosted by others

Hello!

My customers are looking for the best way to document leads and contacts generated by their users attending events that they did not host. They also need a way to import leads and contacts and associate them with this event, as well as document that existing contacts were also attendees at the event.

I've looked into using customer journeys for this, but the only way I've found to import a list to a customer journey is to first import it to a marketing list using an XRM tool, then add the marketing list to the journey. This also requires new contacts to be created first before importing to marketing list. 

Is there a better, more concise way to document this?
