time on a CRM form

Posted on by 2,046

HI folks

I want to have a fields for time in and time out on a CRM data entry form.  My CRM guy is telling me that CRM can only display 30 minute increments.  He wants to make a 4 digit decimal field to hold the time, 23.56 would be 11:56pm.  He will have to then build in validation that the first two digits cant be > 23 and the last two can't be > 59.

Is there not the ability to display and store time that is not 30 minute increments, that can display properly, and have built in validation?

If so what is the field / field type I need to get him to use?

thanks!

We are automating a scale that weighs trucks.  I need time in, and time out.  The date time field as presented by our CRM person showed only 30 minute increments.  He did not tell me you can type over the top of it.

My CRM guy obviously does not know you can type over the top.  he only showed that the drop down incremented in 30 minutes.

What challenge are you trying to solve with this?  Presumably if you're recording Time in and Time Out then there will be a date associated with these times, so you should be able to use the DateTime field.  The DateTime field options default to 30 minute increments, but it is capable of recording any input time by manually typing them/importing them from an external resource.

Good day. In a datetime field you can store any time you need.

If you need show only time, You can do it using a web resource, witch will show only time. In a web resource you can do any increment, if you need it.

I agree.. FieldService is a relatively new addition, though(and, again, it's not like you can't do it.. there is just no out-of-the-box field. So this is not really a huge problem for the field service). Either way, if you have a good "case" for this, you might suggest an idea:

thanks again for the Reply Alex.

I would debate rarely needed in regular CRM.  CRM has / soon will have field service.  A field tech cannot say arrived at 9:20am, only 9 or 9:30?  Seems very limiting.

this is a help forum not debating tho, so i'll leave it there.

    thanks for the suggestion.

I would not say it "can't". But there is no out-of-the-box time-only field type, that's right. It's rarely needed in the regular CRM scenarios.

To have a field like that, you will need a customization - that link can be the place to start.

    thanks for the reply.

the link you sent shows how to separate out the date portion of the date time field.

I am looking for a field that will hold just time in, and time out.  Ideally as 11:59PM, but military time 23:59 would be acceptable.  CRM literally cannot do that?

    Hi,

basically, your CRM guy is correct. I'm not 100% sure how he wanted to do it, so the question of 30 minutes increments is a bit separate, but there is definitely no "time-only" control in CRM.

Here is how it can be implemented, though:
