import of excel using configuration package fails "because info on page not updated"

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I am trying to import a few records for a table called "Skibe" ("ships" in english).

I exported an excel file with three field/columns that I have selected. Deleted all the records except three, where I updated one text field.

I then import it back into BC.using import from excel and finally "Apply package".

After the "Apply package" step I get some weird errors, that I cannot find a way to get rid of.

The error is (translated from Danish):

"Changes to the record Skib cannot be saved because some of the information on the page have not been updated. Close the page, open it again and try again."

Obviously I tried closing the page and reopening it again to no avail.

Any hints?

    Hi

I can tell this is the strange case for me. Based on your description you tested all possible scenarios and we can eliminate Permission (direct / indirect) possibility.

I think you need to ask programmer of that software if they have special code behind that field.

A few suggestions but these may not work as well

    1) if you check all fields in that table do you see any field that is true/false (1 or 0) etc that could define log/relationship between search field and data in search field or another fields? Sometimes programmer use one hidden field to populate value for certain logic. For example if Search field is empty then the value of the other field is False. But if populate then value of other field change to True. if you find such a field what is the behavior when you go to empty search and then add data to it in BC? Maybe this way you can take out the other field populate and upload.

    2) if for empty Search you use the same data as a Name and upload do you get the same error?

    Thanks

I now managed to narrow the problem a bit.

[ The table is part of a special version of BC for marine companies. Therefore most likely not part of your package.]

    I am exporting/importing three fields:

IMO-number: index for table and unique identifier for a ship
    Name: Name of ship
Search name: Search name for the ship.

The "Search name" is empty for most of the records when I export. But interestingly, those records that are empty when exported fail when I import them - irrespective of whether they are still empty or I entered something in the field. Those fields that are non-empty when I export them, I can make changes to and they are successfully imported.

I also tested the case where the field is empty when exported for a record. I then change it in BC (without re-exporting) and I enter a different value in the exported excel spreadsheet. When I import the spreadsheet this field does not fail.

So in other words, if the field in a record is empty when I import, then I get an error. If it contains a value in BC, then it does not fail.

The field is NOT mandatory in the record.

    Hope this makes sense.

Hi, The expert advice above has already ruled out a lot of problem points, just to add a possibility that we are in a Japanese environment and sometimes there are strange problems when importing data. Can you change the language to English and try again?

    Hope this will help.

    Thanks.

    That is strange

Which table (table number) is that? I like to try it in my end as well.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately this did not work either. To verify, I made the export again and then imported the xlsx file immediately with no changes applied. Same error. This time for lots of records.

For some reason though, 6 records did not create errors. Unfortunately I have been unable to identify these records, due to the volume of records (1548).

But, I have been following an instruction video online. And import just a few records using configuration packages which seems to work fine. So I am not sure I am convinced that this is a valid restriction.

    Hi

The package you upload should match the package you downloaded. You can add/edit but cannot delete (it is a method to delete as well). My guess is since you downloaded package with let say 100 records and you upload only 3 records you receive this error. If you only want those 3 record just use the filter, download those 3 records, edit and upload back.

Turned off validation on 2 of the 3 fields. The remaining field is the main index, for which I could not turn off validation. No change.

Are you running with validation on some fields?

Maybe you should try to turn off validation of the fields you import.
