Page numbering in GP Templates not working in header

I have a template that shows only the formula for the page number and not the actual numbers. IE {PAGE  \*MERGEFORMAT}. I have reviewed the bookmarks and compared against functioning numbering on other templates and they all appear to be in place. Does anyone know of what else might cause this and how to fix it. Thanks.

A workaround that I do is I just insert Word's page number instead of dealing with a GP variable.

Thank you for the idea, turns out it is actually the Word page number that doesn't work right, I inherited this messed up template from someone else and it seems to be messed up at the original level, is that even possible? This made me think I could then put back the GP variable but don't see how to on the template, it is not something I can pick off the field list although it is most definitely there on the standard report. Would you know how to put it back so I can see if in fact it does work? Thanks.

First off, make sure to make a backup of your template before proceeding.

If it does not appear in the field list, but you are certain it exists in your report, you need to export the XML for your report to update your word template. When you print your report from GP, select Report Type: Standard --> to file --> XML file type --> Save it to your desktop --> Print report. In the word template --> Developer --> Field List --> Select your report source --> Remove Source to clear your current source --> Add Source --> Select your XML from your desktop to re-import the current fields from your report --> Locate the page number field and drag onto your report. For the page number to work, you have to ensure you have the proper bookmarks setup and that the page number field exists in the same header/footer as the Report Writer report.

To re-add a word page number though, just edit your header/foot, and go to Design --> Header & Footer --> Page Number --> Current Position --> Select the design that suits you.
