Discussion on use of special characters in GP

I have a customer using special characters in the ID field in Inventory. They use GP2010R2.

!@#$%^&*()_+{}|[]\<>? - It's not a curse!
There have been no specific complaints at this time, but it has lead me to wonder about best practices in GP.

What do you all suggest/recommend for any keyed "ID" type field in GP?

Would you recommend any restrctions on "Description" type fields?

    Hi David,

Thanks for the question, there are a couple of blogs that discuss what the impact is of using these characters in GP:

    blogs.msdn.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-gp-and-illegal-characters-part-1.aspx

    blogs.msdn.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-gp-and-illegal-characters-part-2.aspx

Basically, with the exception of using single and back quote characters, using these characters should be OK.

    Regards

    Rob

For what it's worth, we have a customer that has been using the single and double quotes in Item Numbers at least since version 8.0 of GP (now on GP 2010) and there have been no issues.  We have another customer using single quotes in Customer ID's pretty regularly with no reported issues.

I know I have seen issues over the years with various add-ins and reports because of special characters in ID's, but thinking about it...it has been a while since the last one.  All that said, I personally try to discourage using special characters in ID's, just to minimize possible issues.

I try to discourage the use of special characters in ID fields as much as possible (especially speech marks and apostrophes).

I have recently seen an apostrophe in the voucher number causing an error when saving a Payables Voucher.

I see the dash and underscore as less of a risk than the other some other characters though.
