ReportReport
Posted on by 5

Hello,

I am brand new to AX as of 6 months ago and ALSO I do not have a strong background in OO programing.  So this may be tall order.

I have been tasked with making some very basic layout changes to the the sales invoice report. At least at this point I am just working with the layout of the SSRS form. I have not yet had to modify the data set or add new data elements to the report. So just cosmetics.

We know that overlaying of objects is going away and not best practice otherwise I would happily just modify the SalesInvoice ssrs form and be done with it.

My understanding is that now in D3FO the proper method is to duplicate the report and then extend the proper menu item output to point at the duplicated report. This seems pretty straightforward for  a simple report like "top 100 vendors" (PurchRanking report). I played with that one in sandbox and all I did was duplicate the report form and then extend PurchRankingReport menu output to point to the report copy.

HOWEVER: The sales invoice is obviously a whole other can of worms since it is so integral to AX.

We seem to the have the class SalesInvoiceController and also PrintMgmtDelegates(Handler) woven into the whole process. In short, changing the Invoice report seems to be ALOT of work. Most of which I do not understand. My background is mostly in SQL code with a little vb.net from experience maintaining a custom POS application. (very traditional desktop app)

I have found where function return ssrsReportStr(SalesInvoice, Report);  is run in the  PrintMgmtDelegatesHandler class to verify that SalesInvoice is a proper report.  How do I add my copy to the list of reports.   OR since at this point my changes are only cosmetic do I duplicate the base "Report" design? But adding a design to the original SSRS form would seem to require overlaying the form itself with my new version containing the new design which takes me back to starting point of trying to avoid customizing the original form.

I found this post, but appears to be for AX2012

I hope I am making sense. Thanks for any help!
