RE: Dynamics GP 2013 - how to tell what modules are active
Hi Genevieve,
Unfortunately the path provided by Gavin is only half the truth... because you can have a bare minimum setup with GP and still all the modules checked off in the Registration screen...
The registration screen only provides you a list of the modules that the Microsoft keys entitle you to use, which by far doesn't mean it's installed or can be used..
Knowing what modules are installed is a combination of both the Registration form in GP and the list of modules that are loaded in the launch file (DYNAMICS.SET usually).. though you need to be careful, because 3rd-party ISV products will not show up in GP's registration form, as they are mostly handled by the add-on themselves.
The odds are that I've seen many partners setup GP at customer site by just checking off all the modules in the registration screen, which is a mistake IMHO because it can trigger menu entries which you don't even need or ever going to use, since the module might a) be missing from the launch file, or b) not be configured at all.
Adding modules just because you don't know what you're going to really use is a bad choice, as down the road it creates a lot of unneeded SQL objects, that years later can bite you when it comes time to perform upgrades and then someone realizes that there are way too many modules which are never used, removes them from the launch file, but then those SQL objects are not updated anymore, still lingering in the company (or system) databases.
HTH,
