    Hi Akshay,

DIXF is a great tool and uses popular techniques to import data in AX and also export.

It essential comprises of identifying source data, it's structure and template, identify an AX DIXF entity, import in AX in a flat staging schema of the identified entity and posting to target table.

I'll recommend to use the below for learning:

    Hi Akshay,

Rahul provided some great links to learn using the framework. I did understand you want to know what data to import or export. This can be different per implementation. Usually the tool used for data migration from an older ERP system to Dynamics AX. Then you would likely need to import Customers, Vendors, Products and other master data. In addition you can use the tool for importing opening balances and outstanding orders.

Other usage of the tool is e.g. synchronization of data between companies or data dumps for reporting purposes. The tool supports (almost) any form of importing or exporting data.

For some type of data import/export other tools might be better. You can learn which tool would be the best option for each scenario on the next page: Plan data import, export, and migration [AX 2012].

My understanding is that you would like to get hands-on examples of what can you use DIXF for.

First and foremost the most important usage of DIXF is for master data import for a new AX implementation, or creating a new legal entity where you need to add master data based on another company, as André has mentioned.

The other use is like if you have many joint systems around AX and the time comes when you decide you have the capacity and resources to implement it in a centralized place - inside AX. Like in my case we have an eCommerce portal, where the users are authenticated with their own e-mail/password combination that we stored outside of AX, but the authentication and checking if it is a valid login to our AX environment happens in the ERP system, why not bring in the authentication process with the e-mail and password combination from the web DB? So we could create a custom DIXF entity that has pulled information in through ODBC connection from external DB/tables into our own, and during the process we have written business logic to encrypt the login credentials using an advanced encryption algorythm using CryptoAPI.

Also you may use DIXF to exchange information with external applications similar to an EDI exchange, i.e. by uploading your purchase orders to a vendor's FTP regularly in a batch job.

DIXF is a very flexible tool to push and pull information. An alternative to this is the AX Application Integration Framework, with a netTCP port or a File adapter to pull/push data from external sources.

It is always up to the individual case to decide what is the best tool to solve the specific problem at hand.

    Hi all,

@Rahul :  i have gone through the given url from where i find how easily we can import and export data from external source, whether it is from odbc , excel, xml, csv. and these url explain how this process work.

@André :  thank you for explaining  the scenario, tool, plans of this migration.

@Vilmos : how this connect to external dB , like good example of eCommerce portal to connect with AX .

    thank you for this.
