I am a CRM system administrator but I am unable to merge some contact records.
I get the error message below but there is no log file created so cannot tell where the problem lies.

That looks like an exception that comes form some plugin. If plugin causes an error - you can try to deactivate plugins that handle "Merge" message and find one that generates an error and then fix the code of that plugin.
Thanks Andrew. however, we are only using system plugins and I cannot find a for Merge on Contact primary object Type. I do not get this error all the time. it works for most records.
Then I would recommend to turn on tracing - www.powerobjects.com/.../ and try to reproduce your error. Potentially that should bring something to your tracing log.
