Bulk Delete vs. DeleteRequest

Posted on by

We are using CRM2016 Online and we are trying delete a couple of millions of 'Inactive' contacts.  We are comparing between using OOTB Bulk Delete and using a powershell script with ExecuteMultipleRequest / DeleteRequest.  From the performance perspective, the numbers of the records deleted per hour were very close.

What I would like to know is if there are other operations that a Bulk Delete performs behind the scene.  We prefer the powershell script approach for various reasons.

Thank you all in advance.

    Hello,

Bulk Delete's functions is the same as it is called i.e. it deletes data. So I believe there is no big difference between your scripts and Bulk Deletes. The biggest difference I believe is invocation source because your scripts are called from your servers so it takes time to pack request/send it to CRM/unpack and execute. In case of bulk delete everything is done on the server side.

Thank you.  I was wondering if there was any db optimization, such as rebuilding indexes, performed.  Glad to know that there are no big difference between the two.

    Hello,

You might need to consider limitations of ExecuteMultipleRequest message.

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../jj863631.aspx

At a time per organization, only 2 ExecuteMultipleRequest messages can be invoked and if failed, then rollback gets invoked.

I have no idea regarding code that is running behind the scenes but you can install CRM Instance and use .Net Reflector or ILSpy to find relevant piece of code and check what it does.

    Hi AnSDE007,

If your only concern is to delete records, then it is advisable to go the Bulk Deletion route.

The reason is, it is quicker than ExecuteMultipleRequest.

    HTH!

    Thanks!
    Sam
