Tracking two quantities per Inventory Item

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Client manages a warehouse where each Inventory Item is tracked both by the number of pounds of the material and also the number of pieces, such as we have 6000 pounds of eight foot railroad ties, which is a total of 50 pieces.

This is not a "catch weight" application as we do not need to know the specific weight of each railroad tie, but we do need to know both the total number of pounds and the total number of pieces.

If we use the "shipping weight" on the Item Card we can track in pounds and divide for an approximate number of pieces - any way to make the reporting exact?

    LAR,

Unfortunately Richard passed away. I can try to help. I have a client that buys steel by the pound, but sells it by the foot. I have another client that buys oil based on its weight, but it sells it in quarts. We use are UOF schedule to do the conversion. It's not perfect, but it gets pretty darn close.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

Richard, can you please let me know how you set this up. We currently buy 2nd hand steal by the pound but maintain an inventory in each. We currently generate a PO for $0 cost because of the each vs pound and enter the cost at receiving of inventory.  This slows the process down and prevents us from auto-posting receivers using our Warehouse Management software Panatrack.

I have a client with a similar problem.  I don't know if this will work exactly for you.  They purchase metal in pounds but stock it in feet.  The issue is that every shape of metal extrusion has a different weight per foot.  We created a different UOM Schedule for each shape and each shape was given a specific part number.

Now we did not consider the length of the pieces.  If we received 1000 pounds and it converted to 1275 feet we took that into inventory.  Some pieces are 8 feet and some are 8 feet, 3 inches.  We expect a loss of a specific percentage.  In manufacturing this loss percentage can be calculated into the scrap factors.  If you are a pure distribution shop then the only way to account for drop (the short ends left over by cutting pieces) is to perform a scrap issue transaction every-time something is thrown away.

    Hope this helps

RE: Tracking two quantities per Inventory Item

Dynamics GP tracks quantities based on the Item Unit of Measurement, Item shipping weight is an informational field which is used for reporting purposes.

My only concern is that the Shipping Weight field can be changed at any time from the Item Card Maintenance with no restrictions.

You could create a customized report to calculate the shipping weight per cost layer, site or item, according to your business needs. Several tools can be used for this such as SSRS, Crystal Reports, Smart List Builder ... etc

I would calculate the shipping weight based on the "Base UOM" regardless of the other measurement levels for all items.

Your feedback is highly appreciated in order to dig for further details if required.
