Mississippi Special Exemption

I am trying to add the Special Exemption Amount for the state of mississippi on the Employee State Tax Maintenance window for a given employee. When I am looking at any other state the box is available to type, but when I choose MS this box gets greyed out for me. Anyone know what I need to do to make this available to me?

Turns out the problem is/was that the "Self" checkbox to the right for exemptions had been checked and this disables the special exemption box as well.

We discovered this using the method you described of starting with a new employee. Since that worked we went back and cleared everything for the problem record and it did in fact work after that.

I'll mark your last as the answer since it led us to said answer.

    Thanks,

    -Bo

Thanks for the update Bo, what I did was go in and assigned a new employee LA tax and AR tax.  Then i assigned them MS tax and choose the filing status of Married Both Spouses Employed and then the special exemption amount opened up for me to put a figure in.

We have not changed anything recently that I can think of for MS to cause you this problem as I assume you are on a fairly recent tax update and version.

Sometimes the state tax window could be "goofy" if you are going from employee to employee or different states.  So close out the window, then open it, choose this employee and state of MS and that filing status only in the drop down, see if the field is visible to you as it should.

    LMK, thanks

Thank you Terry for the response!

Just verified that no matter which filing status we choose, the option is still disabled.

Is there somewhere else we need to check to ensure the taxes are setup properly?

One thing that might be a contributing factor is that we have the Temporary setup in multiple states. In this case the temp is setup in LA and AR in addition to Mississippi.

    Any other thoughts or ideas?

    Thanks,

    -Bo

    Hi Bo,

My name is Terry and I can help you today.  That field is tricky and a great question!

This field is enabled and disabled for different tax statuses according to what the Mississippi State Tax Department allows. In this case, the State of Mississippi only allows special exemptions for the tax status "Married Both Spouses Employed."

    Hope this helps, thanks!
