GP Test Environment

Posted on by 20

We are getting ready to setup a GP test environment to allow for testing of GP before we apply them to the LIVE company.  I was wanting to see how some of you setup your test environments in that did you setup a totally separate network to mimic the current environment to make sure that everything works through terminal server which is how we are setup or did you all just setup a separate SQL box with a local copy of GP installed on that box without going through the trouble of mimicking the network setup?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

Along with what has been written here, you definitely need a separate SQL instance so that you have your test and live databases separate. Using KB 878449, as mentioned, will help with that.

As far as needing a new install of Dynamics GP or not, if you're going to try different installs, version/builds, etc., then yes, I would recommend a different install for testing purposes as well as a different ODBC System DSN for the test databases, so users don't accidently confuse the two.

    Thanks

When you can start with this KB: support.microsoft.com/.../878449

Then if you can PDV(Physical to Virtual) all of your existing servers you can move your current environment into the virtual world. The trick is to have your test servers and clients exactly as your production versions. Same OS, same version of SQL, same SQL Native clients. The network setup may be the most important part. You never know what may break the connection. If you can mimic everythng exactly it may save you time in the long run.

Generally when I've done this for clients, I have had a separate SQL and Terminal Server to reproduce the environment which often includes eConnect so nwe wanted to make sure that it would be working correctly between servers.
