Dimension Begin and End Totaling Rows

How exactly are these supposed to be set up? I am trying to set up a simple grouping by region. I have an East Coast and West Coast team and within those teams I have a Northeast/Southeast and Northwest/Southwest regions. See below picture. When I try to set up the dimension begin and end total rows it doesn't recognize the begin-total row.

When I go to use the "Indent Dimension Values" function a description of what it does appears. It says it will look at all of the rows between the Begin-Total and End-Total and indent all dimension values between them as well as update the end-total Totaling field. I am presented with the following error when I attempt this.

You can clearly see there is a Begin-Total and an End-Total row. What is the problem here? Another issue is the documentation. There is nothing that explains the Dimension Value setup. The "info" page for setting up Dimensions should not even qualify as "documentation". It basically says that you can set up dimension values similar to the chart of accounts but doesn't give any details on how to set it up. The Chart of Account has row numbers that are used for the totaling field but no such row numbers exist in Dimension Values.

    Hello Brian,

I have passed along your feedback regarding the documentation available for setting up Dimension values, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I noticed that there is a specific piece of documentation that I could not find and would be helpful in this situation, here is the note:

***If you want to set up a hierarchy you must make sure that the codes are in alphabetical order. This includes the codes of the dimension values that are standard.***

I setup your same Dimension Values and Types and we know that TEAM 1 comes after EAST COAST alphabetically, so when Indenting Dimension Values, it's putting TEAM 1 after EAST COAST. So, the order for your Dimension Codes are being placed like this and is the reason for the error, it's not finding a begin-total above EAST COAST:

    EAST COAST (end-total)

    NORTHEAST

    SOUTHEAST

    TEAM 1 (begin-total)

If you made EAST COAST a begin-total and TEAM 1 an end-total, then you would be able to Indent Dimension Values without error.  Your values would then look like this:

    EAST COAST (begin-total)

    NORTHEAST

    SOUTHEAST

    TEAM 1 (end-total)

My apologies for any confusion this has caused.  Please update this Forum if you have any follow up questions.

    Regards,

    Jennifer Reinhardt

Thank you again Jennifer, that actually makes sense. In the absence of row numbers it would need someway to sort the data for totaling.
