Granting access to consultant (Dynamic -Great Plains)

(0) ShareShare

Hello,

We have a consultant that will need to do some development on our existing Dynamics - Great Plain database.  What permission should I grant the consultant?  We currently have  one user for that application (will be 3 users in the future).

We are looking to grant the consultant access (via RDP) to the server hosting the database with local admin privilege.

Please advise.

We are on SQL 2008

Thanks,
TT

I think this is related to server problem. Better contact your IT to look into this issue.

    Hope this helps!!!

For GP 10, does the user need to be added within GP or it has to also be added to the SQL manager as well?

Normally as a consultant, I had Power User within the Great Plains  system.  You aren't saying if this is a production database at the moment.  Usually the agreement is that the consultant will not create or enter any transactions or do any posting.  But when they are developing something for you there is a whole lot of testing that will have to be done.

Do you have a test company that is a copy of your database that the consultant could work in?  Suggestion that you have your consultant set one up. Then give them access to that unless they need to be in production setting this up?

Do you want to give access for GP database?

    or

Do you want to give access the RDP server which is hosted the GP database?

If you create a user in GP, it will be automatically create the same user in SQL with appropriate access provided in GP.

    What is your GP version?

That all depends on what this consultant will be doing and when. If you only have a single GP 10 license then this person should not be in GP during the day. Otherwise GP will have no available connections. All security for GP should be done within GP. Now SQL is another issue. If this person is going to be creating customizations or reports he/she will need additional SQL rights. It all depends on this consultant will be doing. POWERUSER within GP will give this user full rights to whatever company you give them access.

Great forum support.  I want to shift the question a little bit now.  We will have 3 users of GP.  Due to a new user of having a MAC, which GP isn't supported.  We are thinking of turning on remote terminal access (RDP), where users remote straight into the GP server where the database resides.  Any thoughts on this?  These 3 users are highly trusted individuals who take care of budgeting, etc.

If this were my server I would have these users remote to a terminal server that has a GP client on it that connects to the database server. Too many security risks opening up the database server to RDP.

No way would I have users going remote to the SQL server.  Add a terminal server and let people go thru that on an RDP basis.  If you have someone that needs to have MS SQL Manager then give them rights to that from the Terminal  Server.  All you need is someone shuts down your server instead of logging off and you'll be wondering what happened to your server and if someone makes a change on the client on the server then no one can get into Great Plains.   And if one of your other users was cutting checks or in the middle of posting to GP you could have a real mess.

We use terminal server for all of our users access and it works just fine.  But you need to have people on staff that really know how to setup a terminal server.
