Kernel and Application Version Clarification

Hello Friends,

we have installed AX 2012 R3 RTM and applied CU11 later(non slipsteam) on DEV and TEST environment, due to this AX Kernel(6.34000.127) and Application(6.34000.123) versions are not same in my case as it is known issue in AX 2012 R3 CU11 when we install through non-slipstream process.

My question is that can I Install AX 2012 R3 CU11 through slipstream approach on Production or can go with same approach how I did on DEV and TEST, please suggest me on this considering my queries as below.

1. As slipstream approach installs CU11 package with single model  whereas non slipstream process installs CU11 with individual models, is there any code conflicts or issues between these two approaches.

2. As I believe that all the (DEV,TEST and PROD) environments should be sync pertaining to version and model data which helps us when it comes to reproducing Production issues in TEST or DEV and hotfix testing/impact analysis.

Thanks,

Tirupathi

Are you promoting code (axmodelstore) from a different system which has the upgraded code and the correct application version? If yes, then it does not matter how you install the Production AOS instance. You just need a greater (or equal) binary version (kernel version), preferably the latest one. Go with the slipstreamed install.

    Hi Vilmos,

    Thanks for your reply.

what you mean by "promoting code (axmodelstore) from a different system which has the upgraded code and the correct application version"?

Let me explain it again,I have done product development and customization on DEV which installation was done through non-slipstream process, due to that kernel and application version are not same that I explained earlier.

1.As per your suggestion and others opinions as well that I saw somewhere,as long as Kernel version is greater than or equal to application version, then it will not be an issue, if it is correct then I can go ahead with same non slipstream process on PROD environment to get all three environments in sync in terms of version which doesn't arise complications while moving model store/code form DEV/TEST to PROD

2.There is no code or application objects data difference between slipstream and non-slipstream approaches except the application version mismatch which is not same as kernel version and the reason behind this is nonslip stream package installs CU11 package through individual models rather than single model(slipstream process), correct me here if I am wrong.

if the above 1 and 2 are correct, then I can move with non-slipstream process, otherwise(in case of slipstream process) it may arise code conflicts/issues when I move modelstore from DEV/TEST to PROD which I need to get clarified through this post, please guide me.

Requesting your suggestion considering the above concerns.

    Thanks,

    Tirupathi

    Hi Tirupathi,

I will contribute my two cents...

    1) The kernel versions should be the same for the server and client versions. The application version can be different. Note that application main version and kernel should be the same. E.g. application AX2012R3 should run on a kernel (preferrable latest available) also on AX2012R3.

    2) There can be a small difference in objects between slipstream and individual models. I have heard of a scenario which was on CU10 or CU11 but I don't remember the details.

So if you have a tested environment and don't want to do new regression testing, I would not do the slipstream in your scenario.

Thank you all for the help and valuable suggestions.

I went through the slipstream installation for Production environment, also did same for DEV environment by reinstalling the AX 2012 again.
