We have multiple companies in FRX and the main company is the default. I run all company reports from the default without changing companies. My boss changes companies and noticed that the row formats were not being updated even though I had. Well I discovered that our main company had one spec set and all of the rest of the companies had another. What is the simplest most correct solution? Use one spec set for all companies and only log in to one or log in to each seperately each time you want to run a specific company report. From the research I have done, there is not a right or wrong way to do it, I just need some confirmation that I am understanding how default companies & spec sets work correctly.
I think we were originally setup to run all from one spec set, but our IT department does not fully understand FRX and we are still learning. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,
I'm replying from the perspective of an IT side and I couldn't give any best practices about how to use FRx, but I know for sure that I don't play in those settings, unless the Finance users are asking for help :-). Where Dan is right is the fact that FRx is going to be phased out and Microsoft is already providing a replacement for it in the Management Reporter tool. We started to migrate all the FRx reports a few months back in our company and it was pretty straightforward, aside of a few hickups that had to be fixed in the row and column sets. The latest version was release about a month back I think and can be downloaded from Customer Source. If you are a regular FRx registered customer, the upgrade to MR 2012 will be free of charge to you.
You are correct in your assumptions. You can have one spec set for each or one for all. If all have the same accounts and the same reports to run, then 1 spec set for all would work. You just need to change the company on the catalog when you run the report. The spec sets contain the rows, columns, trees, and catalogs. As far as answering your question on the simplest, most correct solution? That depends on the variability of what you have.
On a side note, you are aware that support for FRx (at least from Microsoft) is soon to end (last I heard was 2013) so Frx may not be a long term solution anyway.
