How to input item variants into sales order lines?

Posted on by 3

Dear BC experts,

We have created variants for sales items, but how can they be input on sales order lines?
The sales order lines table on the sales order page does not have a column relating to variants, in our BC instance. (Is that normal?)
When I choose personalize, then 1 extra column can be added to that table, but it is not related to variants either.

Is there a list somewhere: what do I need to do before I can work with variants?
We use the cloud version of Business Central.
Any help appreciated.

With best regards,

Thanks! Both your answers are helpful and correct, according to the manual.

Still there is a strange phenomenon in my BC instance, probably a bug. I have found a workaround that follows below.

    First the strange behaviour:

    - I click to place the cursor in one of the orders lines, e.g. the first orderline, leftmost column

    - I click the gear wheel and choose "personalise"

    - I click "+ field"

A list appears on the right that shows just 1 field "posting description". This is not the field I want. Clearly not all available fields are shown. It seems I cannot do what I want.

    Now the workaround:

    - After the above steps I proceed by clicking to place the cursor in another cell of the orderlines table, e.g. a cell in the second column.

Now the whole table changes color (from white to rose) and the list of available fields on the right grows to include many fields, among which "variant code".

    Problem solved!

But still I found the behaviour confusing. I did follow the steps from the manual, after all:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../ui-personalization-user,

These steps did not give the expected result without doing an extra click in a different cell. Unexpected, to say the least.

I write this up in case anybody experiences the same thing.

    With best regards,

Make sure you personalize in the line. When you click personalize in the Sales Order, you will personalize the Header. You need to click on the Line to switch to personalizing the line.

Variant code is the field you want on the line level. It is there if you personalise correctly. You want the cursor placed in the lines so you get the line related fields. Guide on personalisation: docs.microsoft.com/.../ui-personalization-user
