Hello: If the error "password change failed for an unknown reason" is not attributable toward group policies or other Active Directory items, what else could it be attributable toward? Thank you! John

Have you copied databases from one SQL instance to another? Make sure these users exist in SQL and not only in the databases.

I haven't.  But, I'll check with the client to see if they have.  Thanks, Richard!

I wanted to second Richard's suggestion.  Here is a link to how to transfer the DB's and it also contains a link to the "Capture Logins" script that you will need.

    Hi John,

Make sure the GP user login is not set with enforced SQL security.. because if it does, it would follow some of the GPO's and would require stronger rules than a regular SQL user. Since this is a per user setting, it can be enabled for some users and not for others.. Once a user is locked by SQL, it becomes hard to unlock from the GP side.. and you have to use the SSSM console to unlock the account.

    Hi Beat:

We tried one user who did not have the enforcement policy in effect and still got the same error message.

Does the problem happen with more than one user ?

You could try to use the GP Power Tools and the function that resets all the user password with a single one and forces the users to set a new password at next login..

I reviewed the list of logins in SQL and, along with the client's viewing with me remotely, discovered that the client had mistakenly deleted the GP login in SQL.  This prevented both the changing of the password for that GP user and deleting that GP user.

So, from there, I instructed the client on how to delete the GP user from SQL and then delete and recreate the user in GP.

    I see :-)

With GP Power Tools this problem could have been solved within 2 minutes :-) with the Database Validation tool.. It would have re-created all the missing SQL users that were in the SY01400 table..

Good point, Beat, and I'll remember that!

GP Power Tools, since it replaced the MBS Support Debugging Tool, comes at a price nowadays.  Doesn't it?
