Microsoft Dynamics GP (Archived)

Current User Login Activity Window not selectable

Recently upgraded from v10 to 2010 R2.  All GP users access via Windows 2003 Std. SP2 via Terminal Services.  Seems to occur if the user leaves their session up overnight and the server is rebooted for maintenance or if the user has an issue with GP or it "locks up" and the user end task on the Dynamics.exe process.

Upon relogin to the TS session, the user gets the familiar, "User ID {userid} is already logged in to company {CompanyName}. Would you like to view your current logins?" they press [Yes] and then the 'Current User Login Activity" window pops up. But the issue is two-fold.  1) the window pops up without focus behind the "Company Login" window" so it appears it never really pops up and 2) while the user can see their existing login(s), they are unable to select the session to highlight nor press [Delete].

It may be important to note that users launch Dynamics GP via a custom RDP icon that utilizes the alternate shell:s:"D:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2010\Dynamics.exe" Dynamics.set

so that they do not get a full blown explorer session and as soon as the GP is closed their session is automatically logged out as well. I have tried to recreate this and have so far been unsuccesfull with my user account, but I have witnessed it first hand onsite as well as via a "Remote Control" via the Terminal Services Manager. I have scoured security for windows and was unable to locatet this specific window -- which is popping up but is again, just not on top nor able to be selected or used.

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Ryan,

I've solved this problem with a SQL script that run's on a scheduled job every night... because some of our users tends to 'forget' to close their Citrix Terminal session before leaving and either the Citrix times out or the session gets disconnected, but the Dynamics apps is still running or eventually dying during the night. Since I know for sure that no user will work at 11PM EST (though we have remote offices in Ireland), I just remove all entries from the ACTIVITY table in the DYNAMICS DB, except the 'sa' and my user account, since I may have to work late for maintenance with one of those accounts.

We use Citrix since quite a while now but think eventually to switch to MS TS. Have you had a chance to compare both ?

Let me know if you want me to send you the SQL script.

    Beat,

Thanks for your reply.  I do have a script which is generally found as a possible solution for numerous issues that I we could run to acomplish the clearing out of the sessions & activity tables like you have suggested.  It appears however that the vast majority of these issues are from users that believe that Dynamics is "hung up" and then simply kill it.  They are used to being able to remove their login self-service via the "Current User Login Activity" window, but for some reason it is no longer available to be utilized.

Still looking for a resolution on why it is not in focus and why it is unable to be actioned against.

As to your questions, yes we did previously use Citrix and switched several of our hosted applications to use Terminal Server and more specificaly 2008 Server's RemoteApps functionality. Overall, it works extremely well with the following caveat  "Remote Control" on a Remote App has unpredicable results and should not be used for troubleshooting and assistance purposes as screens can get stuck, keyboard keys being "ghosted", etc.

There are also several applications that don't behave as well with regards to dialogue pop-up boxes and certain windows. But all in all it is less expensive and provides the functionality needed.  There are numerous resources online that provide the matrix of features and go into a much more technical dialogue but the proof is in the pudding and would just say to try it out! :)

    Ryan,

Yes of course the scheduled job if of o use if this happens during the day... and as you pointed it out, run the script on a per need basis.

As for Citrix, one caveheat that we discovered with the actual version is a kind of buffer-overflow in the copy/paste actions, where past a certain number / times of copy/paste actions, the buffer is just full and keeps pasting the same last content over and over, no matter what you copy. The only workaround found so far was to close the Citrix apps and restart it to clear the buffer.. But we'll give surely a test-run to Win2008 TS sometime this year, mainly because is much less costly than the Citrix solution.

Thanks for your input and have a nice day,

    Hello Ryan,

The 'Current User Login Activity' window still exists in GP 2010 R2 if a user doesn't get logged off of Dynamics GP and/or the user account is stuck in a company when they attempt to logon to that company again. They will be prompted that the user ID is already logged into that company and then whether they want to view the list of users. If they click Yes, the 'Current User Login Activity' window will show, where they can select and delete their user account in order to login again.

I did check our case history and did find one case similar to this where users on a Citrix environment didn't see this window; through testing they found that the window was minimized and only showing in the taskbar.

The customer on this case was going to look at Citrix as it is believed to be some type of Citrix setting where certain applications are minimized or hidden behind main windows, as we're not able to re-create this on non-Citrix/terminal server machines.

    Thanks

    Derek,

Many thanks for your reply and investigating the case history. Unfortunately, I am able to confirm that our installation is also experiencing this issue and we are _not_ using Citrix, but rather plain old Windows terminal services.  One thing interesting to note is that we do not have the user launce an explorer.exe session.   I have run across this in some other applications and often times it has been addressed by the application development team with regards to window focus, etc.

Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated. As stated, even after I found it popped up behind the company login window, the inability to interact with the currently logged in window to delete orphaned sessions further limits the user from deleting them from ACTIVITY table.

    Best Regards

    Hi Ryan,

Have you tried to launch your Dynamics GP client thru a batch cmd file ? I had to do this for other reasons then related to Citrix, but in a shared environment, the DEX.ini file is common to everyone. With a cmd launch file, I could use env variables to set the start to user roaming profiles...

    Beat,

No I have not done this for Dynamics, but I have done this for another set of applications that we host on the same Terminal Server. Whereby the batch file simply launches 2 applications due to the limitation of mstsc only leting one specify a single program to start upon connection.

I will try what you have suggested on the users that continue to have the most issues to see if that makes a difference.  I'm not sure how it would if the batch file simply launches Dynamics GP itself.

I am also interested in hearing about the roaming profiles. I assume this lets you maintain a different dex.ini file, thereby hidding the last logged in user and it simply always being their username regardless of if they were really the last one logged in on that Terminal Server?

    Hi Ryan,

It took me a couple of trial & errors before getting it right... but here's the content of my CMD file :

    @echo off
rem This file is used to launch Dynamics GP
rem from within CITRIX MF without parameters
rem echo Press any key to start the GP apps
    rem pause
    c:
    cd
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP"
    if exist %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\AppData\Roaming\Dex.ini Goto StartGP
    copy C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\AppData\Roaming\Dex.ini
    :StartGP
    start Dynamics.exe Dynamics.set %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\AppData\Roaming\Dex.ini
    cd \

Basically I'm testing the existence of the Dex.ini file in the user's roaming path, and copy a default one if it's not the case.
This allows me to reset quickly a non-working dex.ini that a user may have corrupted by accident (in displacing some windows
or after a HW configuration change in the display setup).

Let me know if this fixes you problem.

I am experiencing this same problem.  We have Windows XP and GP 2010 R2 running locally and if a users gets the prompt that their login is already in use the 'Current User Login Activity' window is displayed below the 'Company Login' window and is not selectable.  I know that I have have had this work in the past with 2010 R2 but currently it does not.  Was there ever a solution in this case?

Hello Ed, I tried re-creating this on a test server but wasn't able to. I'm using Dynamics GP 2010 R2 (11.00.1799). This is also a Windows 2008 server OS.

Do you get this issue only on Windows XP systems? If so, I can test that OS as well.

    Thank you
