Analysis Services Project does not open in Visual Studio when clicking Edit in AOT

I have a customer who just installed Dynamics AX R3 CU9 along with Visual Studio 2013 tools in a test environment. From the AOT Visual Studio Projects > Analysis Services Projects right clicking on the Dynamics AX Project and choosing edit pops up the normal infolog but Visual Studio does not launch.

The VS application is associated with the dwproj file extension.

If I navigate in the file in explorer to the \Users\rick.dybvad\AppData\Local\Temp\2\Dynamics AX\ folder and click on the Dynamics AX.dwproj the project opens as expected.

Is there any additional setup that tells AX to open Visual Studio Projects in Visual Studio.

Thanks.

    Hi Rick,

Are you able to open any other VS projects from the AOT such as Dynamics AX Model Projects? if not, try reinstalling only the "VS tools for 2013".

    Workaround:

    1. Go to the location where visual studio file is installed and placed. In my case, it is placed at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe, right click > select "Send to > Desktop"
    2. Right click on Visual Studio shortcut ("devenv" on desktop ) and click properties
    3. Set target = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /AxConfig C:\ConfigFiles\clientconfigfile.axc

C:\ConfigFiles\clientconfigfile.axc [Path of the configuration file where MS Dynamics AX 2012 configuration is stored. This can be UNC file path or local path, depends on your requirements.]

Now, if you open the VS then it will be automatically connected to whole AOT. if not, Visual Studio > View [Menu Bar] > Application Explorer.

This is the best way to connect to the AOT for developers.

Run AX as an Administrator and then edit the project

After some additional research, this is what I found:

Visual Studio will only launch in the AOT from the Database server.

The Database server needs to have the SQL Server Data Tools.

(These tools were called SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Tools in previous versions of VS)

After installing the VS SQL Server Data Tools on the database server, clicking edit on the project now launches VS from the AOT on DAXDB-1.
