Difference Between Copilot and AI Agents in Dynamics 365 Business Central

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand the difference between Copilot and AI Agents in Dynamics 365 Business Central.

With Microsoft’s recent AI updates, I’m seeing a lot of discussions around autonomous agents and Copilot capabilities, but I’m still a bit confused about how they differ in real business scenarios.

From my understanding, Copilot mainly assists users with suggestions and productivity tasks, while AI Agents may automate workflows and actions independently.

Is that correct?
Can anyone share simple examples or explain where businesses would use Copilot vs AI Agents in Business Central?

Looking forward to your insights!

    Hi,

Your understanding is on the right track, the line is just blurry because Microsoft uses both terms heavily.

Copilot is the helper sitting next to the user. User starts a task, Copilot suggests, drafts, summarises, user decides if to accept. Examples, marketing text on Item card, bank reconciliation suggestions, side-pane to ask questions on data.

Agents run alone, on a trigger, no user starting them. The Payables Agent is the clean example, monitors a shared mailbox, reads PDF invoices, matches the vendor, creates a draft Purchase Invoice, waits for human review at the end.

In simple words, Copilot is "ask and assist", Agent is "do it yourself and tell me when done". Copilot fits where the user is already in the system, Agents fit repetitive tasks triggered by an event.

    Hello,
Yes, your understanding is correct: Copilot is mainly an assistant, while AI Agents are more like process workers. In Business Central, Copilot helps the user while they are working — for example, summarize a customer/item/order, suggest sales lines, help reconcile bank transactions, suggest substitute items, or answer questions about Business Central data. The user normally starts the action and reviews the result. AI Agents go a step further: they monitor or run a business process with less manual input, but still with visibility and review. Simple example: Copilot helps an accountant match bank transactions faster; a Payables Agent can monitor incoming vendor invoice emails, read the invoice, prepare draft purchase invoices, and send them for review. Another example: Copilot can suggest sales lines on an order; a Sales Order Agent can read customer order emails and help capture sales orders automatically. So, use Copilot when users need faster help inside their normal work, and use Agents when the business wants a repeatable process handled automatically with human oversight.

Copilot is assistive, it works with you by making suggestions, drafting text, reconciling bank statements, or answering questions in natural language while you stay in control. AI Agents are more autonomous and can monitor conditions, trigger workflows, and complete multi-step tasks without needing you to approve every step.

A simple way to think about it: Copilot is your co-pilot (you're still flying), Agents can handle the routine legs of the journey on their own.

Copilot acts as a smart assistant that helps you complete tasks by suggesting ideas, drafting content, answering questions, or assisting with routine work. You remain in charge and decide what actions to take.

AI Agents, on the other hand, can work more independently. They can analyze information, make decisions based on predefined rules, and carry out multi-step tasks with minimal human involvement. Understanding how AI agents works is important because they can automate processes, monitor events, and complete workflows without requiring constant guidance.

Think of it this way: a Copilot helps you do the work faster, while an AI Agent can take care of repetitive tasks on its own, allowing you to focus on more important responsibilities.

In Business Central you get a bunch of free copilot features: Configure Copilot and agent capabilities - Business Central | Microsoft Learn

This includes thing like Chat, Analyze, Product Descriptions, Sales Lines suggestions and more.

AI Agents are all related to workflows and consume copilot credits (approximtaely 0.01$ USD per credit). The two agents now are the Payables Agent and Sales Agent. For example with the payables agent you will automate the entire payables workflow, you can see how it works here:

    Shows the Payables Agent flow

That's essentially the only difference. In summary just treat it as Copilot = Free (for now) features and Agents = Paid features to streamline a process.
