performance with gp 2015 running on RDS

We have gp 2015 r2 installed on server 2008 r2 running as a remote app, most of the day we run just fine with about 25 users but a few days a week during certain times the cpu of the server locks at 100 percent for about 15 minutes im assuming its a smart list query but I have no way that I know of how to locate which user or process is killing the server can anyone recommend a way to hunt down the culprit ? the rds server has a quad core cpu with 24 gigs of ram running as a vm, the db server on another machine has 2 quad core cpu's and 64 gig of ram the db server doesn't seem to lag at all

thanks

Is it the same time every day?  That would be a massive smartlist - are you using distribution?  I am thinking maybe Management Reporter or are you running anything else on the server like SSRS - I have seen both lock up server.

I would use the SQL Server Profiler so you can see what processes are being ran. You'll likely have to leave it running, but if you know the approximate time this occurs I'd start running it shortly before that. You'll see everyone's activity, but if there's just one that is bogging it down it likely won't be hard to find (and would likely be at the bottom of the trace as the last thing that was running before crashing).

From Management Studio, you can find the profiler under the Tools menu.

I would say that it most commonly happens at the same time I also assumed management reporter, we just upgraded to 2015 and have not setup MR yet and it had issues yesterday, we do not use SSRS, we also do not use distribution. my goal is to see if there are tools available to see who is actually taking the server down to a crawl from there we can see what they are doing.

Sql trace but like above - you will have to leave it running.  Let us know what happens.

    Hi Steve,

It happens to me too from time to time that my RDS server where GP is installed lags terribly... most of the time it's a user's process (like others said, SmartList is often a culprit) that most of the time is loading the CPU to the max... I usually figure out by running the Activity Monitor from the SQL Studio Management to look at the process that is the most demanding at the moment.. Sometimes the users call themselves and ask me to kill their GP session because they ran a BOM View report that is buggy (read has sub-component that are pointing to the parent component.. in this case the BOM report will just loop).

its always RDS that the cpu goes to 100 percent mostly im aiming for MR as the culprit but when it comes to finding the naughty user to kindly discuss their report uses i just cant locate the specific report, i also noticed alot of the users use macros and this may also be an issue, but try to tell a user that their macro is causing havoc and you will see a 7 year old adult  throw everyone in the office under the bus.
