Protecting old Navision 5.x environment after upgrade to BC

Posted on by 10

hi,

My company is planning on upgrading our existing NAV 5.x ERP to BC.

We will not move any historic data to the new system, however still require access to the old data.

What is the best way to host/ protect this old system?

At present we have an application server, SQL server, Reports server and RDP server - presumably we only require the SQL server?

The old system should be read only with ability to extract data but not change it.

thanks in advance for any advice offered

    Hi JAngle,

Thanks for response – currently doing scoping exercise but preferred option is SaaS.

That’s a good point re: licences – I have asked question of vendor.

Not sure how easy it would be to view the required data through SQL only?

Good idea on not moving old historic data. It takes time to do it and inflates the size of the new database - especially if you choose SaaS over on-prem.

Are you migrating to on-prem or SaaS? Only asking as a pre-cursor to licensing considerations. Old versions of NAV to BC entitle you to a discount on licensing as the model changes. Your old NAV 5 license you will want that altering to have 1 concurrent user.

Hosting wise 1 server makes sense as you won’t be throttling the server with loads of users. Just the SQL server in this instance would pan out fine. In terms of data extraction but no data editing, you may want to consider just accessing it from SQL only - for reporting especially. User permissions wise you can control it so users cannot edit things or make extra postings.
