With the latest version of SL, 2018, it seems entry into the serial number selection screen (40.110.06) causes the automatic selection of a serial number for the item in question. We believe in older versions of Dynamics, this was not the cause, and the field remained blank until F3 was pressed and the operator could select whichever available serial number desired. I am looking for a way to return to this functionality. Is there one?

so what financial effect does the change from FIFO to User Enterable have on an inventory item? I want to think there is no financial effect at all, but need confirmation.
Also, I found that by changing to User Enterable, I still can not check the box that says ""Do not assign Lot Numbers at Shipper Creation".
So what does that mean?

I am trying to do as you suggest and change the issue method of an inventory part number to "User Enterable" on screen 10.250.01. When I try, I get System Message 143, This field cannot be changed.
How do I get around this?
Thank you for replying. Ok, I just wanted to make certain it was serialized items and not lot numbered. The option is not available for serialized items.
The product is working as designed because the ISSUE METHOD selected is an automatic selection (FIFO) rather than user enterable. Since a shipper is an issue of product, the setup is telling the system how to automatically put in serial #'s.
In 2011, bug 24060 was entered because serial #'s were not automatically creating based upon setup. So, essentially, 2011 was not working as designed according to how the issue method is supposed to work.
Only the option User-Enterable will stop the automation of serial numbers in Shipper Creation.
MSFT does not support updating this via SQL and does not provide risk assessment in doing so. If you decide to change the system in that fashion it would be an unsupported means of changing the inventory items.
An enhancement was requested that the option to disable the automatic assignment for serialized items too, but MSFT has not made that change.
I have found the check box labeled "Do not assign Lot Numbers at Shipper Creation" on screen 10.250.01. But the check box is grayed out and can not be accessed even in initialize mode. And it is a setting based on each serialized item. How am I supposed to enable this check box for all of the serialized goods?

I believe this has worked this way since at least 2015. I have tested this in 2015 and serial #'s get populated during Shipper creation unless the lot/serial setup has ""Do not assign Lot Numbers at Shipper Creation" is checked. what version did you upgrade from?
