Why is the default price list on the product page locked until the record is saved?

Can anyone tell me why the 'default price list' field is locked out until the new product is saved, at which points it opens up and you can select a price list.

I'm wanting to create a workflow to assign all products to a master price list at default list pricing.

When I go to the workflow page I can not select to update the price list field for the same reason - it is greyed out. Can I make this select-able at the point of creating a product and/or update-able from a workflow?

I basically have a list of 600 products that I want to have available through a price list. It doesnt seem to allow me to assign a default price list when I upload the products or am I missing something?

Help please.

Thanks, makes more sense now. So am I right in thinking you can not import products with the associated default price list assigned? Nor can you assign a price list item on mass? so it is a manual process of selecting each one and assigning to a price list?
