Guidance required for becoming technical consultant

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

Hi folks.

I have 10 years experience in IT service delivery, projects, operations and infrastructure support.

Technically I am strong in networking, telecom, server & video infrastructure.

With graduation in  computer science and have worked as Axapta admin for a year.

I would rate myself as beginner in c#, oracle & Axapta.

Would you please guide me to transform into Technical consultant in Axapta.

I am willing to restart my career at entry level of Axapta . I can devote 3 hrs dedicatedly 5 days a week for this transformation and already have Ax 2012 vm working on my pc.

Request you to provide me guidance on where and how should I start and how much time it would take me to acquire the necessary skills.

Despite the fact that I'm sometimes called a technical consultant, the term doesn't tell me anything - it means different things on every single project, from business consultants with some technical knowledge through pure developers to DevOps and system administrators.

What do you mean by that?

There is no magical solution, nevertheless I can at least share some opinion/advice.

It seems to me that the most successful approach is working on a project with somebody experienced who reviews your code and explains what you do wrong, what's the problem and how it can be solved. After you self-study basics, you should try to find such a project.

You'll need some idea about object-oriented development, relational databases and SQL. I sometimes see developers without these basics who are completely lost in what the system does... When I started with AX, my knowledge of Java, MySQL and such things helped my enormously.

Then read all the documentation you can find - Inside Dynamics AX, MSDN, training materials... You don't want to waste time discovering something that's already clearly described in documentation. If you don't understand something, look on internet - maybe you can find better description or some examples.

Be sure you understand basic building blocks before jumping into complex things. For example, if you don't understand queries, you would struggle with forms and reports.

And get an AX instance to try things in practice - reading documents isn't enough.

And one more thing: the software industry collected quite a lot of knowledge over the years; you can learn some best practices, design patterns, common mistakes etc. without inventing all these things by yourself. Therefore don't look only at sources about Dynamics AX, but also books about programming in general. For example, read The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master - it's an easy read and it may give you some new directions.
