Formatting an indented manufacturing bill of materials printout.

Posted on by 480

We are trying to print indented manufacturing bills of materials in GP 2013. The standard report needs improved formatting (it has too many line feeds and doesn't show indentations). Is there a compact format available in GP? Or what do we use to format a report or export the data to Excel for formatting? At this point, we are using screen prints of the manufacturing BOM maintenance dialog until we find a format that is useable in our shop.

The lack of quality formatted reports in GP (in all the modules) has been a big disappointment. The other printed reports we need are aged receivables by customer and aged payables by vendor. These should be standard reports. Are we missing something? Any suggestions?

If you are using SSRS, check this out.

Created couple of views , the final view is used in SSRS report which takes care of indenting.  This one is for material.  We use separate report for Labor & OH

Thanks for the tip, Trevor. I'll try the trial balances. We have software engineers that can write code. I'd just prefer to have them work on our products instead of Microsoft's. I'm learning how to make financial reports in Management Reporter 2012 just to make the basic of financial reports look presentable. I saw a marketing advertisement by Microsoft that touted the number of reports in GP compared to QuickBooks. Maybe that's true, but the reports are very poorly formatted and in many cases useless.

    Hi Mike,

I agree that the lack of decently formatted reports in GP is appalling especially given where the competition is in that regard.  I believe it to be done on purpose to give the VAR an opportunity to upsell to clients.

Your aging reports in GP are called trial balance reports.  For A/R, go to Reports >> Sales >> Trial Balance.  From there I typically choose Historical Aged Trial Balance.  Similarly, for A/P go to Reports >> Purchasing >> Trial Balance and choose Historical Aged Trial Balance.

I had our partner/VAR create an SSRS indented BOM report that is suitable for Excel.  Because it's not my code I don't feel comfortable sharing it here but know that it is possible to get it exactly the way you want it.
