Applying binary updates to Build environment fails with version mismatch

Last week I applied update 8 ("Dynamics 365 Unified Operations Platform Update 8" to our build environment.

Today (6th July) the details page showed there are 200 binary updates outstanding, so I downloaded them all to the VM extracted the files from the zip file, created a runbook file and started the update.

Initially, it failed at step 18 ("Update script for service model: AOSService on machine: localhost", "update AOS service"), but re-executing with -versioncheck=true -rerunstep=18 caused it to then skip this step.

If then stopped at step 23 ("GlobalUpdate script for service model: AOSService on machine: localhost", "Sync AX database"). In this case, using -versioncheck=true -rerunstep=23 had no effect so I tried synchronising the database via Visual Studio; this gets the same error.

In all cases the error is:

Serialization version mismatch detect, make sure the runtime dlls are in sync with the deployed metadata. Version of file '161'. Version of dll '159'.

Since all components are provided by Microsoft, how do I fix this?

Should I just wipe the build environment and start again with Update 8? If I do that, will I encounter the same error when I try to update the UAT sandbox which is currently on Update 7, and is showing 133 binary updates?

That's the procedure I was following. Microsoft has replied and the error is actually that LCS should not have been listing 200+ binary updates as being required after applying Platform Update 8. I think the fix will be to redeploy the environment.

    Hi Derek,

I ran into the same issue in one of our environment. Did you find any fix for this issue or rebuilding the environment is the only solution. I would hate to do that unless that's the last resort..
