Hi, have you tried displaying rich interactive charts on your Dynamics365 dashboard without using PowerBI?
I ask because I don't want to incur PowerBI costs. I'm currently exploring creating a D3.js web resource, that would build and display the charts. I haven't gone too deep into it, so I just want to know if you have any experience with this, or a more interesting alternative. Thanks.
Hi Chris,
Chart Designer is the built-in tool in Dynamics 365 for creating charts quickly and visually. If you don't want to use PowerBI, you can only use it to design charts.
Based on your description, you want to get rich interactive charts on your Dynamics365 dashboard, Charts built with Char Designer are defined in an XML format that can be exported and customize it. you can make changes that wouldn’t be possible with Chart Designer only after exporting it.
By modifying the XML file and then importing it in Dynamics 365, developers can extend the chart with features that are not currently supported when using the Visual Chart Designer.
You can refer to the following links for more information on how to personalise your charts:

Also, you can customise it with the help of tool--Advanced Chart Editor.
The Advanced Chart Editor enables users to update charts in Dynamics 365 without having to export them first.
