Business Central - On premise for SME (hardware requirements)

Dear All,

I am new to this forum and while I have made several related searches before deciding to post, I really need some input from people who has actual, on hand experience in installing an running on prem. BC installations. Business field: professional services - sales, finance, inventory and aftersales service.

Background: due to unreliable and often interrupted international internet connection - domestic lines are almost never effected - the only realistic approach is on prem installation.

Company size: 30 - 50 users initially. In 2 - 4 years this is expected to double. Failover solution is a must for us - preferably with 2 servers running in the same time in two geographical locations domestically.

Different consultants recommended different hardware setups but the general approach was:

Hypervisior / site:

  • 1x Intel Xeon Gold 6126 12-Core 2.6GHz CPU
  • 2x 32GB RAM
  • 4x 480GB SSD Drives (In RAID 5 providing circa 1.2TB of usable space – To be used for OS and Application Files)
  • 4x 480GB SSD Drives (In RAID 5 providing circa 1.2TB of usable space – To be used for DB files)
  • 1x Internal RAID Adapter
  • 4x 1Gbps Network Ports
  • Full Out-of-Band Management Interface (XClarity Enterprise)
  • 2x 750W Power Supplies (Redundant)

Backup server / site:

  • 1x Intel Xeon 4110 8-Core 2.1GHz CPU
  • 2x 32GB RAM
  • 2x 480GB SSD Drives (In RAID 1 To be used for OS and Application Files)
  • 4x 1.2TBB 10K SAS Drives (In RAID 5 providing circa 3.2TB of usable space – To be used for Backup storage)
  • 1x Internal RAID Adapter
  • 4x 1Gbps Network Ports
  • Full Out-of-Band Management Interface (XClarity Enterprise)
  • 2x 750W Power Supplies (Redundant)
  • 1x External (USB) DVD Reader/Writer

While we are looking for a future proof solution, that is preferably scalable, we are not planning to have more than 100 employees in the next up to 4 years. We do not use active directory at the moment, so username/password login is preferred with occasional mobile app access and using HTML access in 90% of the time.

1. Do you agree with these hardware requirements above?
2. Is this the right configuration for a company of this size? Or is it an overkill?
3. Regarding routers, we were recommended several different models, starting from Synology RT2600 up to CISCO ASA5508 models. What router would you guys recommend for an SME?

Let me know what you think please.

John

Server size seems ok but normally I prefer to have SQL Server on a single machine (like first configuration listed here) and another machine (with less power, 1 x 32 GB RAM and smaller disk) that acts as the service tier (machine where you install the D365BC server part). You can create in the future more that one of this instances to route users (scale your solution).

    Hi Stefano,

    Thank you for your reply.

What about the routers? Are CISCO routers really must have or we can get away - reasonably - with e.g. Synology RT2600AC Routers?

Let me know your thoughts on this please.

Cisco routers are extremely good but absolutely not a must to have. I don’t have a recommendation here, go for a good router. It doesn’t affect your D365BC solution.

Thank you for your quick reply Stefano - much appreciated.

If we go down the rack server way (instead of tower), is there any way of making these rack servers less noisy than a jet engine?

The servers will be placed to a separate room, but high noise level would be an issue. Or should we just opt for tower?

Let me know your thoughts on this please.
