This is also based on your Email provider:
Take a look at the following TechNet article, and check under CRM Online if you are using one of these providers:
technet.microsoft.com/.../dn531050.aspx
Basically per Microsoft it has to be Exchange Online, Exchange On-Premise (2010-2016), Gmail or Yahoo Mail. It might work with other providers, but that it the tested list of email providers.
This is all based on configuring this as Server Side Sync.
I am not giving you the option of Email Router has that has been deprecated in Dynamics 365, and you are using CRM Online.

Yes , it is definitely possible , you can configure a mailbox in crm just like your outlook and use that to send and receive emails.
