2016 on premise versus Exchange online: possibilities?

Dear reader,

sometimes you encounter a subject about which is written so much that you just don't know who is right anymore. So please bare with me, I know the answer is to be found online, but just couldn't find it yet.

We have a Dynamics CRM 2016 on premise installation and we're migrating our Exchange on premise to Exchange online. We're still running version 8.1.0.359 and the upgrade project isn't even in planning phase (don't get me started, but hey, things are the way they are).

So, is it true that I won't be able to get SSS reconfigured as long as we're not at least on 8.2?

Will Email Router, being deprecated and all, be able to help me until 8.2? About the router there's also 1001 different contradicting opinions.

Sure hope someone can tell me the real status of this.
Thanks in advance!

Regards, Jeroen

    Hi Jeroen,

The following article mentions the steps required to configure CRM 8.x and Exchange Online for SSS

    - technet.microsoft.com/.../mt703269.aspx

Article applies to Dynamics 365 (on-premises), Dynamics CRM 2016 (8.0).

Even Email Router is an option till 8.2.

Thank you Aamer, for your quick response!

I already found this link, but it didn't clearly state which versions it's applicable to and several other sites state that only from the december 2016 update and up, hybrid constructions are available.

Can you confirm that our 8.1 version will work with Exchange Online?

According to me and the article, it should work with 8.1 but i haven't done it myself.
