It would be nice if there was a way to add a drill down screen to an existing query. I tried to create a new Quick Query with the drilldown screen I want using an existing view and that seems to create issues
Am I doing something illegal?

The Steps what you did is correct to add Quick Query drill down. But can you try with custom views instead of using the standard one.
Just replicate the standard view and try it..
