Extreme delay in printing a batch -- 20 minutes for a batch with 23 invoices

Hi everyone,

We've observed Extreme delay in printing a batch -- 20 minutes for a batch with 23 invoices. This installation is running on GP 2015 R2.

Our vendor has suggested it maybe a network issue so the same tests were carried out right on the GP server with the GP client running on the same server as the GP database. The time for the same batch is down to 9 minutes so clearly there is room for improving on the other variables but I do want to know: is 9 minutes normal for a batch of that size?

This isn't a printer matter, 9 minutes it takes no matter whether the batch is to be displayed on the screen or printed to a printer.

The GP server itself is brand new overkill box for the job. Ton of RAM and basically overkill on the bare metal in every way.

Will appreciate sharing your experience with batch printing slowness!

Thank you

I don't think it's reasonable. Why don't to you log Dexsql or SQL profiler while posting batch, maybe it will identify where and why it's talking long time.

    Hi Mike,

Thank you for the quick reply. The report being printed is edit list AND posting journals. One page for each invoice with the last page being summary page.

You are asking great questions about the location of those files, which is credible performance consideration. However in our case none of those are relevant as we have eliminated these variables by ruining the client as close to the data as possible -- on the server itself where everything is located on a local disk and the entire network discussion is mood. Dex.ini has no defective UNCs and the issue was originally identified across the board, many users using various computers hence the approach to eliminate all those as variables and focus on the best possible case scenario -- GP client on the server itself

So in that setup I still see 9 minutes delay in printing a batch of 23 invoice. After 9 minutes I do get 24 pages out of the printer, except I would like to know is 9 minutes reasonable?

    Thank you

    ~B

I understand its' an invoice batch.  Can I assume it's an SOP batch?

    What exactly are you printing?

are you printing the actual invoice, an edit list or the posting journals?

Since this is a new server, Where is the report dictionary (Report.dic) and forms.dic in relation to the new server?  Is it local on an another share?  Moving the Report or Forms.dic local should improve performance.

Does the Dex.ini have any references to invalid paths?
